Spider Baseball Takes Series Over Dayton

DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Richmond baseball team collected the Atlantic 10 Conference series with a 15-1 victory in seven innings over the University of Dayton in the second game of a Sunday doubleheaders at Woerner Field at AES Ohio Stadium. UD won the first game, 10-2.
Richmond moves to 29-16 on the season and 10-14 in A-10 action. The Spiders are back in action Tuesday, May 6 at Towson with first pitch set for 3 PM.
Dayton broke the scoreless action in game two in the third inning, scoring on a sacrifice fly against UR starter Joey Giordano. He allowed one run on four hits and one hit batter over his three innings of work.
Chayse Gruber took over on the mound and tossed four scoreless frames, allowing only one base runner via a hit batter to collect the seven-inning victory over the Flyers.
Richmond answered with three runs in the top of the fourth on three hits and a walk. Jordan Jaffe led off with a base hit and was followed with a walk by Jack Arcamone. Both scored on D.J. Pacheco's base hit through the infield to take a 2-1 lead. Michael Elko scored on Trevor Dosenbach's fielder's choice after reaching on a bunt single.
In the fifth, the Spiders batted through the line up as the squad scored six runs on two hits, three hits, one wild pitch and a passed ball. After doubling to lead off the inning, Aaron Whitley collected his 30th stolen base of the season to advance to third. He scored on Jaffe's sacrifice fly for the first run of the inning. Phil Bernstein then scored on a wild pitch, before Jaffe scored on Pacheco's base hit. After getting intentionally walked, Brady O'Brien scored on a passed ball. Elko and Pacheco both scored on RBI fielder's choices for the fifth and sixth runs of the inning and push the Spiders lead to 9-1.
Richmond tacked on five more runs in the sixth inning on four hits and three walks. Bernstein scored from second on Jack Arcamone's base hit through the right side. With the bases loaded, Elko drew a walk to force in a run, before Pacheco and Dosenbach both brought in runs on sacrifice flies. Whitley picked up his second double of the game to score Connor Larson.
Arcamone hit his 12th home run of the season to centerfield in the top of the seventh to make 15-1.
In the first game, the Spiders were down 7-0 through six frames. Grant Kennedy led off the seventh with a pinch-hit base hit before taking third on Aaron Whitley's double to right center. Kennedy scored when Phil Bernstein reached on a Dayton miscue. Whitley scored on Jordan Jaffe's sacrifice fly. The Spiders left 12 on the base paths.
Esteban Rodriguez went five innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on two hits, three walks, two hit batters and two strikeouts. Josh Willitts went two-thirds of an inning, allowing two runs on two hits, a walk and a balk before Jason Shockley finished out the final two and one-third of an innings of the game. Shockley allowed three runs on four hits, two walks and three strikeouts.
