CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — On college golf's biggest stage, a freshman paced the Spiders Monday during the first round of the NCAA Women's Golf Regionals at Birdwood Golf Course. Caroline Thompson, competing in the final event of her freshman season, shot a 4-over 75, three shots clear of any other Spider. She ended the day tied for 41st on the individual leaderboard.
Thompson opened her round with a bogey on the par-5 10th hole but answered with a birdie on the par-3 11th. She proceeded to par 14 of her final 16 holes, including her final six of the day.
Sophomore Maya Beasley carded a 7-over 78 and is tied for 51st place. She's one shot in front of junior Hannah Lydic (8-over 79), who's tied for 57th.
Junior Olivia Wilkie and freshman Katie Magner each shot 10-over 81s and are tied for 63rd place.
As a team, Richmond is 12th among the 12 teams in the field at 29-over par (313). The Spiders are making their fifth team appearance in the NCAA Regionals and first since finishing 12th at the Raleigh Regional in 2023.
Richmond will begin its second round at 8:55 AM on the 10th tee Tuesday. The Spiders will be paired with Radford and the College of Charleston.
