Late Rally Falls Short for Spider Baseball Against Binghamton
03/08/2026 | Baseball
RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond baseball team was unable to complete a late inning rally Sunday, falling 4-3 to Binghamton and dropping the program's first weekend series of the season.
Ryan Recio launched his team-leading fifth home run to left to make it a 4-3 game in the eighth, but the Spiders were unable to make any offensive noise after.
Richmond, 9-7 on the season, returns to action at Pitt Field Tuesday to host Coppin State. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. and the game will be streamed on ESPN+.
The Spiders got on the board first in the bottom of the second when Khris Morris brought in RJ Johnson on a sacrifice fly just on the edge of the infield by second base.
Richmond starter Jackson Hinchliffe put up three scoreless frames to start the game but ran into some trouble in the fourth. Binghamton put up three runs on three hits and a hit batter to take a 3-1 lead. Hinchliffe allowed three runs on four hits, one hit batter and five strikeouts over five and innings of work.
The Spiders cut the Bearcats lead to one run in the seventh inning. Chris Schaller legged out a lead off double then scored on RJ Rickabaugh's double. Trevor Dosenbach moved Rickabaugh up to third on a sacrifice bunt attempt then stole second, but both were left in scoring position.
Binghamton added a fourth run in the eighth, on a solo home run off the Spiders fourth pitcher of the day, Justin Gay, to make it 4-2.
Dom Ruggiero took over for Hinchliffe in the sixth, striking out the first batter he faced before hitting the second. Chayse Gruber tossed two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out one before Gay took over one out into the eighth.
