UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Junior Bryan Pritz (Wilmette, Ill.) scored the game-winning run in extra innings with a bases loaded walk to Richmond's Vito Chiaravalloti (Middletown, N.J.) from JMU's relieving pitcher Travis Miller. Richmond completed a two-game series sweep of James Madison after beating the Dukes 14-7 last Wednesday, April 2. Richmond improves to 24-6, while James Madison falls to 16-15.
James Madison posted the first runs on the scoreboard with a three-run third and one-run fourth. Shea Harris tallied the first run of the game after singling up the middle, advancing on two singles, and scoring on an error by Richmond's Ben Zeskind (Miami, Fla.). Dukes' leftfielder Skyler Doom and Sean Loso scored to finish out the frame. Doom hit a double into right center to score Matt Sluder for the final James Madison run in the fourth frame.
Richmond responded in the fifth with two runs. Pritz led off the inning with a single bunt, advanced to second on a David Reaver (Union Bridge, Md.) sacrifice bunt, reached third on a passed ball, and scored on a Michael Galligan (Woodbury, N.Y.) walk. Junior David Thomas (McLean, Va.) stroked a sacrifice fly to plate Zeskind for the second run of the inning.
The Spiders did not rest, returning in the eighth to knot the game at 4-4. Junior catcher Adam Tidball (Bethesda, Md.) ripped a home run into left field. Second baseman Bobby LeNoir (Wilmington, Del.) followed with a single to shallow left field. LeNoir then advanced on singles by Pritz and Reaver before touching home on Zeskind sacrifice fly.
Neither team could generate a run in the ninth, with both the Spiders and Dukes connecting for one hit in their frames.
The Spiders captured the win in the 10th when Pritz led off with a double into left center. JMU's Miller then walked the next three batters, allowing Pritz to touch home on Chiaravalloti's walk.
Richmond's John Cronin (Branford, Conn.) earned his second win, improving to 2-0. Cronin did not allow a run in the final 1.0 inning of the contest. Richmond's pitching staff struck out a total of 14 batters. JMU's Miller (1-1) took his first loss of the season, allowing two earned runs.
