CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Junior centerfielder Bryan Pritz (Wilmette, Ill.) went 3-for-4 with a double, but it was not enough, as North Carolina beat Richmond 10-0 at Boshamer Stadium. Richmond falls to 40-10, while UNC improves to 34-15.
North Carolina took a 7-0 lead in the first after an uncharacteristic start from Spider ace Tim Stauffer (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.). Stauffer allowed three walks and four base hits in the seven-run frame for the Tarheels. Richmond ended the affair when second baseman Bobby LeNoir (Wilmington, Del.) jumped for a line drive to get the third out.
Stauffer returned to form as Richmond shut North Carolina down in the second and third frames before allowing one run in the fourth for an 8-0 lead. In the second Pritz grabbed a fly ball into the wall for a three-up, three-down UNC inning.
In the eighth, Pritz ripped a two-out double down the left field line. Shortstop David Reaver (Union Bridge, Md.) drew a walk, but the Spiders were unable to generate a run.
Stauffer took the loss, falling to 8-3 on the year. He struck out seven in 6.0 innings after allowing seven hits and six earned runs. UNC's Scott Manshack (4-3) earned the win with 7.0 innings of work.
Richmond returns to action in its final regular-season Atlantic 10 series at Duquesne this weekend, Saturday, May 10 and Sunday, May 11. First pitch is scheduled for Noon on both days.
