UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Junior Ashley Friend tied a career high with five goals, leading the ninth-ranked Richmond women's lacrosse team to a 10-9 victory over the Towson Tigers (4-4) Sunday afternoon at First Market Stadium. Stellar defense by Allison Nuzzi, Samantha Tract, and Megan Riedy plus two goals from senior Caroline McGuire, and one each from junior Morghan Vahue, and sophomores Jenna Hubbard and Claire Cunniff earned the Spiders (7-2) their sixth consecutive win.
Friend started her scoring ways early on with an unassisted goal at the 25:27 mark. Towson's Becky Trumbo put one in at the 21:42 mark to tie the game; however, Richmond's Cunniff answered with an unassisted goal less than 20 seconds later to give the Spiders a one goal advantage. Towson's Hillary Fratzke evened the game out once more with a goal just 12 seconds later; however, the Spiders would score the next three goals to take a 5-2 lead with 9:04 left in the first half.
The first of the three-goal run, McGuire put in off an assist from Riedy, while the other two were free position shots that Friend and McGuire converted. Towson's Trumbo then dropped in her second goal of the contest before Friend converted yet another free position attempt for her third goal of the game as the Spiders took a 6-3 lead. Towson knocked in two more goals and Friend put one more in off an assist from McGuire before the halftime, giving the Spiders a 7-5 advantage.
Towson came out and put in the first two goals of the second half to tie the game at the 18:51 mark; however, Richmond's Vahue answered with a Spider goal off an assist from Nuzzi just 40 seconds later to return the lead to her teammates. Towson's Fratzke followed less than two minutes later with her third goal of the game to even the game up for the fourth and final time, before Richmond's Hubbard would score off an assist from McGuire and Friend would put in her fifth goal of the contest as the Spiders took a 10-8 lead.
Despite one more Towson goal by Fratzke and several close free position attempts at the end of the game, the Tigers could not get another needed goal by the determined Jackie Swansburg and the solid defense in front of her and the Spiders ended with a one-goal advantage.
The Spiders will now conclude their three-game home stretch with UC-Davis Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. Live coverage will be available at www.RichmondSpiders.com.
