UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -
Despite a game-high five goals from senior Mandy Friend, Richmond fell to No. 17 James Madison, 14-11 Saturday afternoon at First Market Stadium.
Friend got the Spiders on the board with an unassisted goal four minutes into the game. JMU countered with a goal of its own 30 seconds later from Mary Kate Lomady. Friend put the Spiders up 2-1 after a free position shot with 16:40 remaining in the first half. The Dukes responded with three unanswered goals to go up 4-2. Friend cut the deficit to 4-3 after an unassisted goal with 14 minutes left.
"We will continue to work on our transitional game," said head coach Sue Murphy. "We will work on having a more balanced attack."
Lomady struck again for the Dukes, followed by an unassisted goal from freshman Jules Nicola, assisted by Fifield to put the score at 5 all with seven minutes remaining in the half. JMU went up 6-5 after an unassisted goal from Jaime Dardine. Sophomore Anne Ryan scored the equalizer off an assist from sophomore Danielle Schaevitz. JMU scored two more goals to close the half at 8-6.
Friend opened the second half much like the first, scoring a quick goal to put the score at 8-7. Friend scored her fifth goal of the game three minutes later to put the score at 8 all. JMU responded with a goal from Caitlin Sullivan at the 40 minute mark. Richmond countered with a goal from senior Allison Furstenburg to put the score at 9-9 with 18 minutes remaining.
"I was pleased to see we were in a position to win the game against a nationally-ranked team," said Murphy. "I would like us to execute our game plan more effectively."
JMU pulled away, scoring four consecutive goals in the span of six minutes. Furstenburg scored an unassisted goal with 2:50 remaining to cut the deficit to 13-10, but the Dukes responded a minute later with an uanassisted goal from Ashley Kimener. Furstenburg scored the final goal of the game with 45 seconds remaining.
"Tori gave us some good minutes in the goal," said Murphy. "Overall, we gave a better performance today than games past. We are needing to mature in game-ending scenarios."
Friend led Spider scoring with five goals, followed by Furstenburg's three goals. Fifield, Nicola and Ryan each added one goal apiece for the Spiders.
Dardine led eight different Dukes in scoring with three goals.
The Spiders travel to Longwood for a game Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
