Spiders Fall On The Road At Liberty, 10-7

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team dropped a hard-fought game on the road at Liberty, 10-7, on Tuesday night.
With the setback, Richmond falls to 14-15-1 on the season overall, while the Flames improve to 26-8 on the year.
Sophomore Matt Dacey led the Spiders offense Tuesday night, going 3-for-3 with a two-run home run and two runs scored. Classmate Tanner Stanley also had a two-run homer in the loss for the Spiders.
Senior Mike Small had a RBI triple, while classmate Cory Moheit had a run-scoring double for Richmond. Freshman Kurtis Brown also drove in a run with a single in the third inning.
Liberty jumped out to an early lead in Lynchburg, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first and then four in the bottom of the second to take a 6-0 lead over the Spiders.
Richmond responded in a big way in the top of the third, however, batting around and cutting the lead to 6-5.
After an Eric Flanagan single, Small tripled down the right field line to score UR's first run. After a Moheit ground-rule double plated Small, Stanley cleared the bases with a towering, two-run home run over the fence in right field. Five batters later, Brown scored the Spiders' final run in the frame with a RBI single up the middle.
In the bottom of the third, Liberty answered the Spiders' offensive outburst with three runs of their own, pushing their advantage to 9-5 over Richmond.
After a scoreless fourth inning, Dacey cut the Flames' lead in half with one swing of the bat. The sophomore clubbed his Atlantic 10-leading eighth home run of the season over the fence in right field, recording his 31st and 32nd RBI of the season.
Trailing 10-7 in the top of the ninth inning, Richmond was unable to mount a rally in the frame, falling on the road to the Flames.
The Richmond Spiders remain on the road Wednesday when the team travels to Lexington, Va. to face VMI. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
