09/07/2014 | Field Hockey
HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Richmond field hockey team fell to the James Madison Dukes, 2-1, in a double overtime thriller Sunday afternoon at the JMU Field Hockey Complex. Junior Kimberly Sportack found the back of the cage for the Spiders.
Despite the loss, Richmond (2-2) outshot the Dukes (3-0), 14-13. Senior Rebecca Barry led the Spiders with four shots and one on goal, while Amy Cooke followed with three shots. Six other Spiders created scoring opportunities for Richmond.
After a quiet first half, Richmond was the first to score in the 59th minute. Avery Safford fired a shot on goal that the James Madison goalkeeper, Hannah George, saved and Sportack connected off the rebound for the junior's first goal of the season and fourth of her career.
The Dukes responded right at the end of regulation with the tying goal at the 70-minute mark to force the first extra period.
In the first overtime, junior Kelley Wentling remained strong in goal for the Spiders as she forced double-overtime stopping both shots on goal from the Dukes.
With less than two minutes left in double overtime, Loes Stijntjes returned off the penalty bench and immediately fired to notch the game-winning goal. The Spiders created three opportunities in the two extra periods with two shots and a corner.
Wentling matched her season-high of five saves as she spent the entire 98 minutes in goal for her second loss of the season, while George recorded the win with seven saves.
The Spiders will continue their longest road swing of the season when they travel to Kent State Friday, Sept. 12 at 1 p.m.
