Spider Baseball Sweeps Fordham With 15-5 Victory

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team completed a three-game sweep of its Atlantic 10 series with the Fordham Rams on Sunday afternoon with a 15-5 victory at Captains Park in Newport News, Va.
With the victory Richmond improves to 13-8 on the season overall and in to first place in the Atlantic 10 with a conference mark of 5-1. With the loss, Fordham falls to 8-17 on the year and to 0-3 in league play.
“Today showed once again, that no matter the deficit, our guys never think we are out of a game,” Richmond head coach Tracy Woodson said. “Yesterday, we were down five runs late and came back to win. Today, we go down four early and our guys never thought we were out of it. They knew we could score runs and that's what we did.”
Junior OF Tanner Stanley led the way for the Spiders, going 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, four RBI and three runs scored. Freshman Kyle Adams continued his hot play, going 3-for-5 with a double, four RBI and three runs scored. C Aaron Newman also plated four runs, going 2-for-4 on the day.
On the mound, senior LHP Dylan Stoops (1-0) pitched five solid innings to earn his first win of the year. Freshman RHP Brendan McGuigan allowed just one run over 2.2 innings of relief, while RHP Ray Harron pitched a perfect inning.
Trailing the Rams 4-0 heading in to the bottom of the fourth inning, the high-powered Richmond offense would score 15 of the game's next 16 runs over the course of the next four innings.
The Spiders tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with four runs, before scoring two more and taking the lead for good in the fifth. UR then scored four times in the seventh and five in the eighth to seize complete control of the game.
Other offensive standouts for the Spiders in the victory included OF Michael Morman and OF Jansen Fraser. Morman went 3-for-5 with a double, a RBI and a run scored, while Fraser had a triple, drove in two and scored a run. 1B Doug Kraeger reached base five times, drawing four walks and scoring four runs.
In the three-game series with Fordham, the Richmond offense was simply unstoppable. As a team, Richmond batted 45-for-114 (.395) with five homers, 10 doubles, two triples and 38 RBI. On the weekend, the Spiders scored 39 runs against the Rams on 45 hits.
