Spiders Clinch No. 3 Seed In A-10 Tournament With 18-4 Win

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team crushed the Davidson Wildcats on the road on Saturday afternoon, 18-4.
With the victory, Richmond ends the regular season with an overall record of 27-23 and a mark of 15-9 in the Atlantic 10. Davidson ends the regular season with a mark of 26-20 and a league record of 14-10.
With the win, Richmond clinched the No. 3 seed in next week's Atlantic 10 Tournament and will face the No. 6-seeded George Washington Colonials at 10 a.m. on Wednesday in Washington D.C. The No. 3 seed for the Spiders is the highest for the team since 2007.
The Spiders ended the year tied for second place in the league with Rhode Island, but lost the tiebreaker to the Rams based on URI winning the series against UR this season, two games to one.
OF Michael Morman and C Brandon Johnson led the offensive onslaught for the Spiders on Saturday afternoon. Morman batted 4-for-6 with a double and three RBI, while Johnson hit his first career grand slam. OF Tanner Stanley hit a two-run homer and scored three times for Richmond.
OF Jansen Fraser had two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs, while OF Kyle Adams hit a two-run homer. SS Tyler Beckwith had a pair of hits and a RBI, while DH Kurtis Brown had a RBI single in the win.
LHP Dylan Stoops (6-1) was outstanding for the Spiders on Saturday afternoon, pitching six strong innings to earn the win. The senior allowed three runs on seven hits, striking out eight in his final regular season start for Richmond. Both RHP Keenan Bartlett and RHP Ray Harron worked scoreless innings of relief for the Spiders.
In the top of the first inning, Richmond exploded for eight runs, taking advantage of three walks to seize early control of the game. In the frame, Morman had a RBI single, while Stanley plated a pair of runs with a base hit of his own.
Three batters later, Brown made the UR lead 3-0 with a run-scoring single through the right side of the infield. The big blow came from Johnson, who blasted his first career grand slam over the fence in left to make the Spider lead 8-0 after a half inning.
Two innings later, Richmond pushed its lead at Davidson to 10-0 with a pair of runs. In the frame, Fraser hit a RBI double down the left-field line, while Beckwith scored another run with a run-scoring triple to right-center field.
After Davidson scored three runs to cut the lead to 10-3 after five innings, the Spiders responded with four runs in the top of the sixth.
In the frame, Morman had a two-run double down the left-field line, while Adams blasted a two-run homer over the fence in right to make the Richmond lead, 14-3.
In the top of the seventh, Stanley crushed his fifth homer of the season – a two-run shot – over the fence in left-center field to make the Richmond lead 16-3.
Fraser added another run to the Spider lead in the top of the eighth, with a wild pitch allowing one more to cross the plate in the inning to push the UR lead at Davidson to 18-4.
