Richmond Defeats Drexel 2-1 For Lucido's 100th Victory
08/30/2015 | Field Hockey
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond field hockey team (2-0) jumped ahead of Drexel (0-2) early and held on in the end for a 2-1 victory on Sunday afternoon. In doing so the Spiders secured the 100th-career victory for ninth-year head coach Gina Lucido.
“I owe this accomplishment to so many people,” head coach Gina Lucido said. “All of my former players and assistants have a hand in this. I've been extremely lucky to have great people and players around me during my time here and I can never thank them enough. The girls played extremely well this weekend. I'm so proud of the way they worked and overcame some adversity.”
Senior back Amy Cooke got the scoring started with a goal off of a penalty corner in the 11th minute and it was Kelly Quinn who came up with the game winner in this one when she poked home a loose ball in the circle in the 36th minute. The Spiders out-shot the visiting side 6-3 in the first half but the Dragons came on strong at the end of the second half to equal the tally at 8-8 for the game.
Freshman goalkeeper Emily Braunewell made two saves in her goalkeeping debut for Richmond, which will now visit the campus of James Madison University for a tilt with Big Ten foe Iowa on Friday, Sept. 4.
The Spiders were applying pressure early and often in the first half, pushing Drexel back on its heels before eventually earning a penalty corner. Avery Safford set up the try and served the ball to Allison Haas who killed the ball and allowed Cooke to run up and fire the one-time shot into the back of the cage cleanly for her first goal of the season. She finished the weekend with a team-leading three points after adding an assist during Friday's win.
The second half wasn't even one-minute old before the Spiders lit up the scoreboard once again. From the whistle the ball moved quickly into the Drexel zone and amidst some chaos around the cage the ball rolled freely in front. Quinn seized the opportunity, reached out and redirected the bouncing ball home for the eventual game-winner.
From that point on Drexel controlled the pace and even pulled their goalkeeper in favor of a positional player with just over six minutes to play. The Dragons would out-shoot Richmond 5-2 in the second half and most of the damage came over the final minutes. The Spiders would surrender one goal but held off the strong attack over the final two minutes to secure the historic victory.
The game served as the first “Spiders Teal Game” in order to raise awareness for Ovarian Cancer Awareness month, which takes place during September. The team partnered with the Richmond based Cancer Dancer organization to raise money for research and spread the word on this little known disease.
