LEXINGTON, Va. – The University of Richmond traveled to face long-standing rival, VMI on Tuesday evening. Despite coming back from a five-run deficit, the Spiders were unable to hold off the Keydets and dropped the contest, 6-3.

The Spiders pitching staff of Peter Bovenzi, Zach Grossfeld, and Aaron Winkler combined for 15 strikeouts.

The Keydets were all about the long ball on Tuesday evening as VMI jumped out to a 5-0 lead after four frames behind a couple of two-run homers and a solo shot.

Richmond rallied back pushing across three runs in the fifth to cut VMI's lead to two. With two outs, Daniel Brumbaugh doubled to left center and drove in D.J. Lee for the first run of the night. Behind a balk and a Jonathan de Marte RBI single, the Spiders put two more on the board to cut VMI's lead to two, 5-3.

VMI responded in the home half getting with a solo homer from Tyler Tharp to go up 6-3.

In his first start of the season, Bovenzi made his first start of the season and notched a career-high eight strikeouts in his four innings of work. In Grossfeld's three innings of relief, he scattered two hits Winkler took over the hill in the eighth and registered three strikeouts, matching his career-best.

Richmond will be back in action tomorrow when Norfolk State comes to Pitt Field. That game is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m. and will be available on SpiderTV.
