Spiders’ Defensive Effort Comes Up Short In 2-0 Loss To No. 13 Saint Joseph’s
10/14/2018 | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The University of Richmond field hockey team held strong against No. 13 Saint Joseph's on Sunday afternoon, but the Hawks scored once in each half to take a 2-0 win on their home turf.
Neither team managed to hold possession in the opening minutes, as the majority of play was in the midfield.
After the Spiders logged two-straight corners, the Hawks took control, putting on the offensive pressure. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Emily Braunewell led the defensive unit which held Saint Joseph's scoreless through their first six corners, but it was the seventh attempt that found the back of the cage for a 1-0 lead for the hosts late in the half.
Despite taking the lead into the break, the Hawks only held a two-shot advantage, taking six to the Spiders' four.
The Spiders came out in the second half with the offensive momentum, earning three more early penalty corners, but it was the Hawks who struck again 10 minutes into the half on a penalty stroke to take a 2-0 lead.
Junior Elise Zwicklbauer looked to have scored on a reverse shot midway just minutes later, but the goal was called back. As the momentum shifted again and the Hawks took control, Braunewell kept the hosts and no. 4 scoring offense in the country off the board.
The Spiders were unable to capitalize on their final chances despite holding strong on defense. Braunewell finished the game with eight saves, while Steffie Bongers led the offense with three shots.
Richmond returns to action on Friday, October 19, when they host Davidson at Crenshaw Field. Before the 3 p.m. game, the Spiders will honor seniors Emmy Bowe, Emily Braunewell, Felicitas Heinzel, Nealy Henderson and Olivia Hubert.
