10/19/2018 | Field Hockey
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond field hockey team scored two first-half goals on its way to a 2-0 shutout win on Senior Day over Atlantic 10 foe Davidson.
Before the game, the Spiders honored seniors Emmy Bowe, Emily Braunewell, Felicitas Heinzel, Nealy Henderson and Olivia Hubert, who were recognized on the field along with their parents.
"We looked fit and fast today and played with a lot of intensity on both ends," head coach Jamie Montgomery said after the shutout. "I was proud of our offensive pressure and am happy we could get a win for our seniors on their Senior Day."
Richmond came out firing early in the game, as Bowe found rookie Addie Nash for the game-winner in just the fifth minute of play. The goal was Nash's fifth of the season, while Bowe logged her second assist of the year.
The Spiders continued to pressure the Davidson offense, earning three penalty corners in the opening frame. The third attempt in the 24th minute saw Hubert insert to rookie Steffie Bongers, who sent a straight shot into the cage after it deflected off a defender's stick for the 2-0 lead. Bongers now leads the team with six goals, while Hubert extends her team lead to six assists on the season.
Richmond took a 7-2 shot advantage into the break, as well as a 3-2 edge in penalty corners.
Davidson looked to get on the board in the second half, but only managed to take one shot. Although Richmond did not find the back of the cage for the remainder of the game, they managed 12 second-half shots, six of which were on cage and stopped by Rodriguez.
The Spiders finished the game with a 19-3 edge in shots. Heinzel and Braunewell each saw time in cage in the shutout.
Richmond returns to action this Sunday, October 21, for its home finale against Lock Haven. Game time at Crenshaw Field is set for 12 p.m.
