Spiders Post Second Straight Shutout Win, Defeat Lock Haven, 2-0
10/21/2018 | Field Hockey
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond field hockey team scored once in each half on Friday afternoon and shut down a quick Lock Haven offense on its way to a 2-0 win Atlantic 10 win over the Bald Eagles at Crenshaw Field.
Â
"Our defensive effort as a team set the tone for this weekend," head coach Jamie Montgomery said after the Spiders didn't allow a goal in two conference games. "I'm proud of the way we worked together through the length of the field to shut out two good A-10 opponents."
Â
The Spiders struck early in the game, when junior Elise Zwicklbauer broke off into a fast break and beat the Lock Haven goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead in just the third minute.
Â
The Spiders cooled off after taking the lead, firing off two shots through the remainder of the half. Lock Haven took three of their own, but trailed the hosts at the break, 1-0.
Â
Lock Haven came out of halftime with momentum and looked to tie the game early, but junior Amanda DaSilva logged a defensive save and goalkeeper Emily Braunewell followed that with a save of her own to hold off the Bald Eagles.
Â
The Spider defensive line of Steffie Bongers, Emma Nash and Becky Carter worked with Braunewell to stop each Lock Haven attack, which in turn led the Spider offense to earn a penalty corner in the 63rd minute. Senior Olivia Hubert inserted the ball to Bongers, whose shot found the stick of senior Nealy Henderson for the deflection goal and a 2-0 lead.
Â
Lock Haven could not capitalize for the remainder of the game, as the Spiders went on to earn their second 2-0 shutout win of the weekend.
Â
Richmond returns to action next Friday, October 26, when they travel to face A-10 foe Saint Francis (Pa.). Game time in Loretto is set for 3 p.m.
