10/26/2018 | Field Hockey
LORETTO, Pa. – The University of Richmond field hockey team trailed host Saint Francis late in the game on Friday afternoon, but two late scores from rookie Addie Nash in the final seven minutes sent the Spiders home with a 3-2 win.
Â
"I am incredibly proud of the way the team fought for today's win," head coach Jamie Montgomery said after the win. "Our defensive effort and intensity fed our offensive tenacity. It was a great day for this group!"
Â
With the win, the Spiders move to 4-4 in Atlantic 10 play and qualify for the program's 18th consecutive A-10 Tournament.
Â
The Spiders started the scoring midway through the first half, when Olivia Hubert sent a cross to Elise Zwicklbauer, who sent the ball into the cage for a 1-0 lead.
Â
The Red Flash rebounded quickly, scoring just over seven minutes later to even the score with under ten minutes to play. Neither team managed to take the lead in the final minutes, heading into the break in a 1-1 tie.
Â
Saint Francis came out with momentum in the second half, scoring just over three minutes in to take a 2-1 lead. Richmond went on the attack midway through the second half, rattling off five-straight shots, but the Red Flash goalkeeper kept the Spiders off the board to hold the 2-1 advantage.
Â
With just seven minutes to play, Nash sent the ball past the Saint Francis keeper off a penalty corner to tie the game once again. She was assisted by Amanda DaSilva on the play.
Â
The game-winner came with just over a minute to play, as the rookie received the ball from Zwicklbauer and sent the ball into the far corner of the goal.
Â
The Red Flash looked to score on a penalty corner with no time left, but Spider goalkeeper Emily Braunewell and the defensive unit held strong for the 3-2 win. Braunewell finished the game with six saves, including two in the closing minutes on Saint Francis penalty corner opportunities. Zwicklbauer and Nash led the team with three shots each.
Â
The Spiders will now head to Philadelphia for the 2018 Atlantic 10 Tournament, hosted by Saint Joseph's. Richmond earned the No. 4 seed, and will face the No. 1 seed and 12th ranked host Hawks on Friday, November 2, at 11 a.m.
