UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Behind a gem of a pitching performance from Tim Miller and an offensive outburst from Vinny Capra, the Spiders shutdown Lehigh Friday afternoon for a 7-0 victory.
It was all zeros on the scoreboard as the Spiders and Lehigh were locked in a pitcher's duel. That was until Richmond broke through in the fifth. A single and a stolen base put D.J. Lee in scoring position in the fifth. Capra proceeded to single up the middle to plate the first run of the day.
Capra continued his hot day at the plate with a bases clearing double in the sixth to extend Richmond's lead to 4-0. The Spiders continued to threaten in the inning loading the bases again, but Lehigh got out of the jam.
Miller went six scoreless innings on the hill. The right-hander scattered just three hits, allowed one walk and struck out four. He gave way to Antonio Balducci in the seventh. Balducci, a left-hander, registered a career high three strikeouts in his three innings of relief where he allowed just one hit.
The Spiders added one run in both the seventh when Anthony Forte scored on a wild pitch. A sac fly from Sage Bruhl and a Kyle Adams single plated two more runs in the eighth to give Richmond a 7-0 lead.
Balducci pitched the top of the ninth to earn the save and secure the Spiders' win and earn his first collegiate save.
Richmond is set to continue action in the Spider Invitational tomorrow at 2PM with Yale.
