UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The Spider Baseball team kept everyone on the edge of their seats on Saturday afternoon. Richmond erased a four-run deficit and scored five runs in the eighth for the come-from-behind 8-5 victory over NCAA Tournament participant, Yale
Yale (3-10) struck first getting a run across on a sac fly in the first inning. The Spiders (10-8) answered with a run of their own in the home half on a groundout from Kyle Adams.
The Bulldogs went on to grab a 4-1 lead in the top of the third on a pair of hits. In the sixth, Yale tacked on another run to extend their lead to four runs, 5-1.
There was a two-out spark in the bottom of the sixth as the Spiders cut Yale's lead to two, 5-3 behind a two-run double from Justin Cook.
Kyle Schmidt sparked the Spider offensive outburst in the eighth when he blasted a solo shot over the left field wall to chip away at the Bulldog's lead, 5-4. With two outs, Anthony Forte smacked a triple down the right field line to bring home D.J. Lee and even the score at 5-5. Vinny Capra laced a single to right to drive in the go-ahead run before a balk allowed Richmond to plate an insurance run to take a 7-5 lead. Tim Miller capped off the scoring with a double to the gap in left center to bring in Daniel Brumbaugh and make it 8-5.
Layne Looney took over the hill in the ninth and shut down the Bulldogs to secure the comeback victory and register his second save of the save.
Richmond is set to conclude action in the Spider Invitational tomorrow at 2PM with Monmouth.
