Late Rally Leads Spiders Over Monmouth Sunday, 7-6
03/18/2018 | Baseball
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The Spider Baseball team likes to keep things interesting and Sunday was no different as they closed out the Spider Invitational with another comeback victory, this time a 7-6 win over Monmouth.
The Spiders grabbed a 2-0 lead after the third inning thanks to Vinny Capra triple and a Daniel Brumbaugh groundout. Monmouth answered in the top of the fourth as the Hawks plated five runs to take a 5-2 lead.
In the fifth, behind an Anthony Forte double and a Capra single, the Spiders trimmed Monmouth's lead to two, 5-3. The Hawks, however, pushed across a run in the top of the sixth to go ahead, 6-3.
The Spiders got within two, 6-4, when Forte laced a single to right in the home half of the sixth, to bring home Kyle Adams, who led off the inning with a single. For the second straight day, Richmond rallied in the eighth. Michael Strait doubled down the left field line to bring in Kyle Schmidt and then a D.J. Lee single plated Sage Bruhl to even the score 6-6. An RBI fielder's choice allowed Strait to cross the dish and give the Spiders' a one-run lead, 7-6.
Dalton Light picked up his first win of the season and Layne Looney earned his third save, and second in two days.
Richmond continues its homestand tomorrow (Monday, March 19) when Princeton visits Pitt Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3PM.
