Baseball Survives Marathon Game to Finish Opening Weekend Undefeated
02/16/2019 | Baseball
KENNESAW, Ga. – On a day that started at 9:30 a.m., Richmond baseball's Jarrad DeLarso (Marlton, N.J.) got a batter to pop up to short at 10:26 p.m.to finish the day a perfect 2-0. After defeating No. 17 Georgia Tech earlier in the day, Richmond made the trip up to Kennesaw State to take on the Owls on the backend of a split doubleheader. The Spiders and Owls duked it out for 4 hours and 11 minutes, the longest game for the Spiders since May 19, 2017 against VCU. Richmond outlasted KSU, 9-8, to improve to 3-0 to start the season. This is the first time since the 2013 season in which the Spiders started the season 3-0, and it's the best start to a season in the Tracy Woodson era. Richmond was the only one of all six schools participating in the Atlanta Challenge tournament to finish the weekend undefeated.
Brendan McGuigan (Austin, Texas) got the start in the weekend finale. The redshirt-senior went 3.1 innings, allowing four hits and three earned runs to go with four strikeouts before giving way to Jacob Marcus (Malvern, Pa.). In his first collegiate appearance, Marcus went 2.2 innings, allowing two earned runs and struck out five hitters. Aaron Winkler (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) was next on, going an inning, giving up three runs, one earned with a walk to earn the win. Garrett Aylor (Austin, Texas) made his collegiate debut, going 0.2 innings with a walk and a strikeout before giving way to Jarrad DeLarso (Marlton, N.J.). DeLarso tossed the final 1.1 innings, allowing just one hit and a strikeout to earn his first save of his career.
The Spider offense made up for the lack of quantity of hits, with some high-quality at bats. Richmond worked 12 walks and two batters were hit to put runners on. Of the three Richmond hits, Justin Cook (Virginia Beach, Va.) had two and drove in three runs. Tyler Plantier (Poway, Calif,) added the third hit. A loud RBI double in the top of the seventh.
The Owls scored the first runs of the game in the bottom of the third inning. After a hit batter and a walk put two on, Jake Franklin drove a two-strike offering to left center to score two and put KSU up early.
Richmond took advantage of the Owls struggles on the mound in the top of the fourth inning. After D.J. Lee (Frankfort, Ill.) reached on an error, Plantier was hit by a pitch to put two on for Cook. Cook drove a single to centerfield where it was misplayed, allowing two to score to tie the game. The bottom of the order worked a couple key at bats, as A.J. Kloehn (Canton, Ohio) and Justin Meyer (Villanova, Pa.) reached via walk and Daniel Little (Nicholasville, Ky.) added an RBI with a hit by pitch. Jordan Schulefand (Parkland, Fla.) and Lee each worked walks to drive in two more runs as the Spiders went up 5-2.
Kennesaw State answered in the bottom half of the fourth, plating a run by virtue of a bases loaded balk. The Owls kept the rally going into the next inning, plating a pair of runs to tie the game up at 5-5.
The Spiders regained the lead in the top of the seventh inning. Schulefand and Lee drew lead off walks before back-to-back wild pitches brought a run in and put Lee on third. Plantier barreled up the first pitch he saw and drove it to the base of the wall in left field, allowing Lee to score. Another bases loaded wild pitch brought in the third run of the inning to extend the lead to 8-5.
The Owls knotted the game up again in the bottom of the frame. After two singles put two on, a double from Jaylen Smith brought the first run in before an error allowed two more to score to tie the game.
Richmond answered the next half inning as Lee and Plantier drew back-to-back two-out walks to set the stage for Cook. Cook delivered a sinking line drive to center field to bring in Lee and give the Spiders the lead late.
DeLarso gave up a lead-off single in the bottom of the ninth, but got a fielder's choice, a looking strikeout and a pop up to short to end it and give the Spiders their third victory of the weekend and second of the day.
The Spiders are back in action this Wednesday with the home opener against James Madison at 2 p.m. at Pitt Field.
