Schaub Homers to Force Extras as Baseball Ties Monmouth
03/20/2019 | Baseball
RICHMOND, Va. – After relinquishing the lead in the top of the sixth inning, freshman Brian Schaub (Hatfield, Pa.) hammered a game-tying home run in the bottom of the frame Wednesday night at Pitt Field against the Monmouth Hawks. Schaub and the Spiders couldn't find the hit the needed over the next seven innings as the Spiders and Hawks ended the 13-inning affair in a 6-6 tie because of darkness. Richmond moves to 11-5-1 on the season, while Monmouth is now 6-11-1.
Kent Morrison (Herndon, Va.) started on the hill, going 5.0 innings, scattering three hits, two earned runs and struck out two. Antonio Balducci (Mechanicsville, Va.) was first out of the bullpen, giving up a couple singles, striking out two and walking one before Jacob Marcus (Malvern, Pa.) came out for a career-best 5.1 innings in relief, scattering three hits and striking out five hitters. Brian Craven (Hingham, Mass.) tossed the 12th and 13th, striking out three hitters.
The Richmond offense earned 13 hits in the contest, led by Daniel Little's (Nicholasville, Ky.) 3-for-5 performance with a walk. Richmond also had a pair of two-hit efforts from Kyle Schmidt (Smithville, Texas) and Justin Meyer (Villanova, Pa.) Meyer led the team with two RBI. Schaub hit his second home run in as many games in the sixth inning to force the tie game.
The Spiders jumped ahead early, plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Jordan Schulefand (Parkland, Fla.) led off with his team-leading seventh double of the season before a walk and a single loaded the bases. Anthony Forte (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) got the barrel on a pitch, and the top spin on the grounder was too tough to handle for the Monmouth first baseman, allowing Forte to reach and Schulefand to score. Meyer drove in the second run after a sacrifice fly to center field to put Richmond up 2-0.
Richmond added to the lead two innings later. Forte led off the inning with a double to left center, before a walk and a fielder's choice put runners on the corners. Mark Ready (Dallas, Texas) looped his first hit of the season to center field to score Forte and extend the lead to 3-0.
The Spiders scored two more the next inning to extend the lead out to 5-0. Sage Bruhl (Northbrook, Ill.) singled to left to start the bottom of the fourth and came around to score after Schmidt laced a double to the wall in left center field. A walk and a hit by pitch loaded the bases and Meyer added his second RBI of the day with a fielder's choice to score Schmidt.
Monmouth got on the board with a couple runs in the top of the fifth inning. With one out, a walk and a single put two on before a fielder's choice and two more singles brought in the two runs. Schulefand threw out a runner attempting to score from second after a Kyle Norman single to end the frame and keep the Spiders up 5-2.
The Hawks again rallied, this time to take the lead in the sixth. Three-straight singles led off, and scored a run. After a walk loaded the bases, Max Goione tucked a triple that bounced off the third base bag down the line to clear the bases and put Monmouth ahead.
Schuab tied the game up with one swing of the bat in the bottom of the sixth, tying the game after hitting a solo home run with two outs.
The Spiders threatened several times as the game went on, but were unable to find the big hit they needed. The Spiders had two or more runners on in each of the next seven innings, including a bases-loaded one out situation in the 10th, but the offense couldn't capitalize. In total, Richmond stranded 17 runners on base.
Richmond is back in action Friday as it will host the Marist Red Foxes at 3 p.m. at Pitt Field. The Spiders and Marist will play a three-game series with games on Saturday and Sunday.
