Baseball Drops Home Matchup with Marist
03/22/2019 | Baseball
RICHMOND, Va. – After going up early against the Marist Red Foxes Friday afternoon, Richmond couldn't maintain the advantage, falling in the first game of the weekend for the first time this season Friday night. The Spiders dropped the contest 8-2 and fall to 11-6-1 on the season. Marist improves to 7-12 with the victory.
Tim Miller (Wayne, Pa.) started Friday's contest on the mound, going 5.0 innings, allowing seven hits, five runs, four earned and struck out a pair. Dalton Light (Atlanta, Ga.) was the first reliever used, going a full inning with a strikeout. Antonio Balducci (Mechanicsville, Va.) worked the seventh inning, striking out two without allowing a run. Aaron Winkler (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) gave up three runs, two earned to go with a strikeout in his inning of work before Sammy Senders (Potomac, Md.) worked the ninth inning without allowing a run.
The Spider offense went for eight hits in the contest, with three players finishing with a pair of hits. Sage Bruhl (Northbrook, Ill.) and Kyle Schmidt (Smithville, Texas) each finished 2-for-4 as Bruhl added a run scored. Brian Schaub (Hatfield, Pa.) went 2-for-5 with an RBI and scored a run. Freshman outfielder Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y.) added an RBI. Justin Meyer (Villanova, Pa.) and Daniel Little (Nicholasville, Ky.) each added a hit in the contest.
Richmond took the lead in the bottom of the first inning, thanks to an RBI from Schaub. Bruhl drove a 3-2 pitch back through the box to single, before a pair of wild pitches moved him to third. Schaub, who homered in each of the last two games, didn't need to leave the infield to bring in the run as his bouncer up the third baseline wasn't handled and he reached on the infield hit to take the lead 1-0.
Marist took the lead the next half inning after a Matt Rubayo single and a two-run home run from Robbie Armitage put the Red Foxes up 2-1. With runners on the corners, a double steal brought in another run to put Marist up 3-1.
The Spiders cut into the lead in the bottom fourth inning after Schaub singled and moved to second after a wild pitch. A ground out to the right side moved him up to third before Hipsman flew out to center field, but the sacrifice fly brought in Schaub and cut the lead to 4-2.
Randy Taveras responded for Marist the next half inning, leading off the frame with a solo home run to extend the lead back to three. Marist tacked on three more insurance runs in the top of the eighth inning, thanks to a couple RBI hits.
The Spiders and Red Foxes are back in action tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. for the second of the three-game series at Pitt Field.
