Baseball Can't Overcome Early Deficit, Falling to Marist
03/23/2019 | Baseball
RICHMOND, Va. – The Spider offense struggled to get on track after falling behind the Marist Red Foxes early on Saturday afternoon at Pitt Field. Richmond gave up five runs in the top of the first inning and couldn't find the offense needed to get within striking distance the rest before ultimately falling, 11-1. Richmond falls to 11-7-1 on the season, while Marist improves to 8-12.
Lowell Schipper (Santa Monica, Calif.) started on the hill, going just a third of an inning, allowing three hits and five earned runs. Jacob Lamb (Salisbury, Conn.) settled the game down out of bullpen, throwing 4.2 innings, scattering three hits, an earned run and struck out two. Matt Olson (Mableton, Ga.) threw an inning with a strikeout. Jarrad DeLarson (Marton, N.J.) logged 2.0 innings, allowing one hit and one base runner. Hunter McGarvey (Lansdale, Pa.) made his debut in the ninth, striking out three hitters.
The Richmond offense combined for eight hits in the contest, coming from seven players. Sage Bruhl (Northbrook, Ill.) led the way with a 2-for-4 performance. Anthony Forte (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) added a hit and scored a run and Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y.) drove in his third run of the season in the loss.
Marist took the lead in the top of the first inning after a three-run home run from Frankie Gregiore and a two-run homer from Robbie Armitage. The Red Foxes added to their lead in the next inning. With runners on the corners, Randy Taveras bounced into a double play, but a run scored to put Marist up 6-0.
Richmond answered with a run in the bottom of the second. Forte and Brian Schaub (Hatfield, Pa.) singled in back-to-back at bats to put two on. A ground out to the pitchers moved them into scoring position, and Hipsman bounced a ground out to second base, allowing Forte to score to get the Spiders on the board.
The Red Foxes added to their lead in the top of the sixth, scoring five more runs on four hits, taking advantage of a couple Spider errors.
The Spiders and Red Foxes will conclude the three-games series tomorrow afternoon at noon at Pitt Field.
