04/12/2019 | Baseball
RICHMOND, Va. – In a one-run ball game in the top of the fifth inning, senior captain Tyler Plantier (Poway, Calif.) ignited a rally that put the game out of reach Friday afternoon against the Dayton Flyers. With Richmond leading 3-2, the Spiders exploded for 13 runs on 10 hits and sent 18 hitters to the plate to take control of the contest. The Spiders rode out the big inning to earn the win 17-5 to improve to 17-13-1 and 4-3 in Atlantic 10 play. Dayton falls to 18-15-1 and 7-3 in league action.
Tim Miller (Wayne, Pa.) turned in his third consecutive quality start Friday afternoon. Miller worked 6.0 innings, allowing just a pair of hits, two runs, one earned and struck out three. Aaron Winkler (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) came on in relief, throwing 2.2 innings, allowing three hits, two runs and struck out one. Mason Majors (Kansas City, Mo.) made his collegiate debut, issuing a pair of walks and giving up a double. Antonio Balducci (Mechanicsville, Va.) recorded the final out via fly out.
At the plate, the Spider offense went for 17 hits, led by a 4-for-7 performance from lead-off hitter Jordan Schulefand (Parkland, Fla.) Schulefand finished with four singles, two RBI and scored twice. Plantier added a 3-for-5 game, tying his career-best for hits in a game. Plantier also drove in four runs and scored twice to go with a pair of singles and a home run. D.J. Lee (Frankfort, Ill.) and Justin Cook (Virginia Beach, Va.) each added a pair of hits, two runs scored and three RBI in the win. Lee also hit his fourth home run of the season as part of the 13-run fifth inning.
The Spiders got on the board in the first inning. Schulefand started the game with a single and moved into scoring position after Sage Bruhl (Northbrook, Ill.) drew a walk. Plantier tickled a single to center field to drive in Schulefand for the first run of the game. Bruhl later came around to score on a wild pitch to give the Spiders a 2-0 lead after the first.
Schulefand helped add to the lead in the second. After walks put two runners on and a double play moved Cook to third, Schulefand bounced a single through the left side to drive in Cook and put the Spiders up, 3-0.
Dayton cut into the lead in the bottom of the third inning, plating a pair of runs. After a single and a hit batter led off the frame, a single to left field drove in one and a misplay allowed the second run to score to trim the lead down to 3-2.
Richmond broke the game open in the top of the fifth, matching a season-high 13 runs scored in the frame. The Spiders sent 18 hitters to the plate as all nine in the lineup scored at least one run. Of the 10 hits in the frame, only three went for extra bases, with a pair of home runs hit by Plantier and Lee, each in their second at bats in the inning.
The teams exchanged solo runs in the seventh and ninth innings as Cook tallied an RBI with a single in the final frame.
The Spiders and Flyers are back in action tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. in Dayton.
