Baseball Takes Series at Dayton After Splitting Saturday's Doubleheader

Game one starter Brendan McGuigan (Austin, Texas) worked 4.0 innings, allowing four runs, three earned and struck out three. Jarrad DeLarso (Marlton, N.J.) tossed 1.2 innings in relief, allowing a run on two hits. Garrett Aylor (Austin, Texas) was next on, going 1.1 innings allowing a run. Jacob Marcus (Malvern, Pa._ relieved Aylor, going 1.2 innings, allowing an unearned run to go with two strikeouts. Antonio Balducci (Mechanicsville, Va.) got the loss, tossing the final 1.2 innings with a strikeout to round out the first game's pitching.
Kent Morrison (Herndon, Va.) started the nightcap, throwing 2.1 innings, allowing three runs and striking out a pair before giving way to Jacob Lamb (Salisbury, Conn.) Lamb worked the next 3.1 innings to earn the win, not allowing a run and striking out a pair. Brian Craven (Hingham, Mass.) worked two hitters in the sixth and Dalton Light (Atlanta, Ga.) got out of a bases loaded jam for the final out in the sixth. Light worked the seventh inning, retiring all three hitters he faced. Layne Looney (Dallas, Texas) pitched the final two innings, scattering a hit and striking out four hitters in the win.
The Spider offense continued to apply pressure all day as the team combined for 29 hits in the two games. Tyler Plantier (Poway, Calif.) led the Spiders with a 7-for-10 day with seven RBI, a home run, a double and scored three times. Sage Bruhl (Northbrook, Ill.) was a tough out in the second spot of the lineup, finishing 7-for-11, scoring five times and driving in a couple runs. Jordan Schulefand (Parkland, Fla.) added two hits and a double in each game, scoring five times during the day. In the nightcap, Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y.) finished 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI to go with a single in extra innings in game one.
The Spiders dropped a see-saw game to start the day, striking first in the first inning of game one. After back-to-back singles from Bruhl and Plantier put two on, Kyle Schmidt (Smithville, Texas) singled to drive in Bruhl and put the Spiders up after the first inning for the second-straight day.
Dayton tied the game in the bottom of the second inning after an RBI single from Takahiro Yamada.
Richmond responded in the top of the third inning. Schulefand led off the inning with a double down the left field line before Plantier drilled a double to center to bring him in and helped the Spiders regain the lead.
The Flyers used a pair of doubles of their own to knot the game at two each in the third.
D.J. Lee (Frankfort, Ill.) led off the fourth inning with a solo home run to give the Spiders back the lead before Dayton plated a pair of runs on a Spider error to take the lead at 4-3.
Richmond knotted the game in the top of the fifth. Schulefand singled and moved to third after a Bruhl double. Plantier was the clutch hitter again, singling to drive in the tying run.
Dayton took a 5-4 lead in the sixth on another Yamada RBI single.
The Spiders hung their first crooked number of the afternoon in the top of the seventh to take a 7-5 lead. Bruhl and Plantier started the rally with back-to-back singles to start the frame. After a sacrifice bunt moved them into scoring position, Lee reached on an error that allowed both to score and the Spiders took a 6-5 lead. Lee stole second and Justin Cook (Virginia Beach, Va.) added a clutch single to score Lee and give Richmond a two-run cushion.
The Flyers knotted the game in the bottom of the eighth, taking advantage of a hit by pitch and a walk to start the inning. After a wild pitch moved the runners into scoring position, a groundout brought both in to tie the game at seven.
Dayton took the first game with a walk off single from Connor Echols to take game one 8-7 in 11 innings.
The Flyers opened the scoring in the nightcap, plating a pair of runs in the second inning. After a lead-off walk and a double put two in scoring position, Marcos Pujols doubled to drive in two and put Dayton up 2-0.
Richmond took its first lead of the nightcap in the top of the third inning, plating three runs. A.J. Kloehn (Canton, Ohio) got the rally started with a single before a Schulefand double put two in scoring position. Bruhl drove a double to bring in two before Plantier singled to bring Bruhl around and put the Spiders up 3-2.
Dayton tied it up in their half of the third, using a triple from Riley Tirotta to score one and knot it at three.
The Spiders rallied to score four runs in the top of the fifth inning. Bruhl started the inning with a single and moved up on a Plantier walk. A sacrifice bunt moved the two into scoring position before another walk loaded the bases. Mark Ready (Dallas, Texas) drove a ground ball to third base where Dayton wasn't able to handle it, scoring two. Hipsman connected on his first extra-base hit of his career, a two-RBI double to extend the lead to 7-3 Spiders.
Richmond added an insurance run in the sixth. Schulefand led off with a single and oved up on a Bruhl groundout. Plantier dropped in a single to the outfield to drive him in and put the Spiders up by five. Plantier added an exclamation point in the top of the eighth in a three-run homer.
The Spiders are back in action Tuesday as they head to Lexington for a matchup with the VMI Keydets of the Southern Conference.
