Baseball Splits Doubleheader at St. Bonaventure
04/27/2019 | Baseball
OLEAN, N.Y. – Richmond baseball took game one of the doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Olean, N.Y., 6-1, before falling in the nightcap 5-0. The Spiders, playing in their sixth doubleheader this season, move to 22-17-1 and 8-6 in Atlantic 10 play with the split. St. Bonaventure moves to 9-23 and 5-9 in league play. Spider pitching was tough against the St. Bonaventure lineup, holding the Bonnies to just 12 hits in the two games.
Tim Miller (Wayne, Pa.) posted another strong start in game one of Saturday's doubleheader. The redshirt sophomore threw 7.0 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and struck out six hitters on 100 pitches. Miller earned another quality start and has done so in all four Atlantic 10 Conference starts this season. Jarrad DeLarso (Marlton, N.J.) closed out the final 2.0 innings, scattering three hits and an earned run to go with a strikeout in the win.
Jacob Marcus (Malvern, Pa.) was dealing in the nightcap, striking out a season-high 14 hitters in 6.0 innings of work. The 14 strikeouts are the most for a Spider pitcher in a single game in the Tracy Woodson-era. After giving up a home run in the second inning, Marcus struck out eight of the next nine hitters, and 11 of the final 15 hitters he faced before giving way to Dalton Light (Atlanta, Ga.). Light worked 1.1 innings, striking out one hitter and allowing three earned runs. Layne Looney (Dallas, Texas) came on to finish the eighth with a strikeout.
In game one, Spider catcher Kyle Schmidt (Smithville, Texas) paced the offense. Schmidt went 3-for-5 with an RBI. Four Spiders had multi-hit efforts and five drove in runs. Sage Bruhl (Northbrook, Ill.), D.J. Lee (Frankfort, Ill.) and Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y) each had a pair of hits in the first game.
Richmond's offense couldn't get on track in the nightcap, managing just four hits. Jordan Schulefand (Parkland, Fla.), Schmidt, Justin Cook (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Mark Ready (Dallas, Texas) each had a base hit in the contest. Richmond couldn't find the hit it needed as the Spiders had a base runner on in eight of nine innings. St. Bonaventure wiggled off the hook thanks to three double plays and picked a runner off in the first inning.
After four scoreless innings in the first game, the Spiders broke it open in the top of the fifth with three runs. Lee singled to start the frame and went first to third after Cook singled. Hipsman drove a single through the right side to bring in the first run. After a sacrifice bunt from Ready moved two into scoring position, Schulefand ground out to the shortstop, but pushed a run across. Bruhl fought off an 0-2 pitch to single through the opposite side to drive in the third run and the Spiders took the 3-0 lead.
The Spiders tacked on two more runs the next inning. After a single and a walk put two on, with two outs, a strikeout should have ended the inning, but Hipsman's speed forced a tough throw to first that got away. Schmidt scored on the play and Cook advanced to third. Ready chopped a two-strike single the opposite way to drive in the second run of the inning and put the Spiders up 5-0.
UR added to the lead in the top of the seventh after doubles from Bruhl and Schmidt extended the lead to 6-0.
The Bonnies got on the board in the bottom of the eighth after a lead-off double, the runner moved to third on a ground out and scored after a balk was called on the Spider pitcher.
In the nightcap, St. Bonaventure got the scoring started in the bottom of the second thanks to a two-run homer from Jeff Palczewski. The Bonnies added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Two walks put two on and Kevin Higgins tripled to drive two in and extend the lead to 4-0, SBU. An infield single after the triple drove in the fifth Bonnie run of the second game.
Richmond and St. Bonaventure are back in action tomorrow at noon in the final game of this three-game Atlantic 10 set.
