Kloehn Hits His First Spider Home Run in Series Finale at Florida State
05/12/2019 | Baseball
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Redshirt senior catcher A.J. Kloehn (Canton, Ohio) gave the Spiders a 2-0 lead with his first home run of the season Sunday afternoon at Dick Howser Stadium in Tallahassee. Florida State countered with six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take the lead and eventually sweep the series after the game was called due to weather after the seventh inning of play. The Spiders fall to 25-22-1 on the season and Florida State improves to 34-18.
Aaron Winkler (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) got the start in Sunday's finale, turning in 3.1 shutout innings, scattering two hits. Garrett Aylor (Austin, Texas) was first out of the bullpen, going an inning and allowing three earned runs to go with a strikeout. Dalton Light (Atlanta, Ga.) made an appearance before giving way to Brian Craven (Hingham, Mass.) Craven tossed 1.2 innings, allowing two hits and an earned run to go with a couple strikeouts. Jarrad DeLarso (Marlton, N.J.) tossed the final inning, allowing a hit and a strikeout.
The Spider offense went for six hits from six different players. Kloehn's home run was = loudest and Mark Ready (Dallas, Texas) doubled down the right field line for the other extra-base hit. Jordan Schulefand (Parkland, Fla.), Anthony Forte (Hoffman Estates, Ill.), Kyle Schmidt (Smithville, Texas) and Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y.) each singled in the contest.
After the Spiders held the Seminoles scoreless in the first inning for the first time on the weekend, the Spiders jumped out to a lead in the second inning. Hipsman legged out an infield single to put a runner on for Kloehn. Kloehn hammered the first pitch he saw and sent it beyond the Spider bullpen beyond the left field wall to put Richmond up 2-0 early.
FSU took the lead in the bottom of the fifth, plating six runs. With one out, back-to-back home runs put the Seminoles ahead 3-2 before three-consecutive walks loaded the bases. A double down the third baseline drove in another before a sacrifice fly to left brought in the sixth run of the frame to extend the lead to 6-2. Florida State added another run in the sixth. A two-out single from Drew Mendoza put a runner on and he stole second. Robby Martin singled to bring him in and extend the lead to five.
The rain came in the top of the eighth inning with the Spiders threatening, but inclement weather did not allow the game's full nine innings to be completed as Richmond dropped the finale, 7-2.
Richmond returns home for a three-game Atlantic 10 series against the Saint Louis Billikens at Pitt Field beginning Thursday at 3 p.m.
