02/23/2020 | Baseball
RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond baseball was back at Pitt Field Sunday, playing a doubleheader against the visiting Lehigh Mountain Hawks beginning at 10 a.m. The Spiders took the morning contest 4-1, before falling in the nightcap 8-5. Sophomore infielder Mark Ready (Dallas, Texas) hit his first career home run in the nightcap as the Spiders' comeback attempt fell short. Richmond is now 2-5 on the season, while Lehigh is now 1-5.
Leadoff hitter Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y.) finished the day 3-for-7 with a double and three runs scored. Outfielder Jordan Schulefand went 4-for-8 with a double, a triple, two RBI and scored a run during the day and infielder Daniel Little tallied a 4-for-7 day with a double, a triple and scored twice. Ready came in off the bench in game two to hit his first career home run.
Collin Lowe (Ridgefield, Conn.) dominated on the mound in game one. The redshirt sophomore tossed 6.2 innings, allowing four hits, one unearned run and struck out four to earn his first win. James Hulbert (Harrison, N.Y.) earned the team's second save of the season, going 2.1 innings in relief, allowing just one hit and striking out three to help secure the win.
Jacob Marcus (Malvern, Pa.) started the nightcap. The sophomore threw 6.0 innings, allowing four hits, four earned runs and struck out nine before suffering the loss. Sammy Senders (Potomac, Md.) was the first reliever, going 0.2 innings with two strikeouts and allowed a run. Matt Olson (Smyrna, Ga.) worked to a couple hitters before giving way to Garret Aylor (Austin, Texas). Aylor worked 0.1 inning, giving up a walk and a hit. Mason Majors (Kansas City, Mo.) worked a full inning, allowing just one hit in a shutout frame. Jarrad DeLarso (Marlton, N.J.) tossed the final inning with a strikeout.
The scoring started in the bottom of the third inning of game one. After a hit by pitch and an infield single put two on, a ground out to the right side put two in scoring position for Drew Blakely (Galesburg, Mich.). Blakely roped a double down the left field line to score a pair and put the Spiders up 2-0.
Richmond added to its lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Schulefand led the frame off with a triple down the right field line and scored after a Justin Cook (Virginia Beach, Va.) ground out to third base.
Lehigh got on the board in the top of the seventh inning as Tim DiLoreto chopped a ground ball to the left side where it was misplayed, allowing Tyler Schreiner to score.
The Spiders answered with a run in the ninth as Little doubled to start the frame and moved to third on a ground out. Schulefand put the ball in play and the Lehigh shortstop couldn't make the play, allowing Little to score and the Spiders to extend the lead back out to three where Hulbert finished the job to close out the win.
In the nightcap, the Spiders jumped ahead early, scoring two runs in the first inning. Hipsman started the game with a double and moved to third after a Little single. Blakely lifted a fly ball to centerfield to bring in Hipsman for the first run of the game. After a Dan Leckie (Suffield, Conn.) single to centerfield, Schulefand legged out an infield hit to score Little and put the Spiders up 2-0.
The Mountain Hawks answered the next half inning after a walk and a single put two on before Matt Hand doubled to left center to score two.
Richmond answered in the third inning after Little tripled to the left field corner and scored on a Blakely sacrifice fly to shallow left center that was caught by the shortstop.
Lehigh scored at least one run in each of the final five innings, with solo runs in the fifth and sixth coming via the long ball. In the seventh inning, Lehigh scored via a bases loaded walk. Lehigh added two runs in the top of the eighth after a lead off solo homer and a walk came around to score on a Gerard Sweeney single to right.
Richmond answered in the bottom of the eighth. With two outs, Hipsman worked a walk before Ready hit his first home run of his career on a 2-1 pitch to cut the lead down to 7-5.
Lehigh added a solo run in the ninth. With one out, a double started the rally before Schreiner connected on a full-count single to bring in the 8th and final run.
Richmond is back in action on Tuesday as it hosts Coppin State at Pitt Field at 1:30 p.m.
