Baseball Drops Matchup with Old Dominion
03/20/2021 | Baseball
RICHMOND, Va. – Spider baseball dropped a 4-3 contest to the Old Dominion Monarchs Saturday afternoon at Pitt Field. A bases loaded wild pitch in the top of the fifth inning proved to be the difference as both teams were held scoreless over the final four innings. Richmond falls to 5-4 on the season, while ODU improves to 13-4.
Drew Blakely (Galesburg, Mich.) led the Spider offense with a 2-for-4 performance. Graduate students Chris Rinaldi (Westfield, N.J.) and Dan Leckie (Suffield, Conn.) each had a hit, with Rinaldi's bringing in all three runs on the afternoon. Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.) tried to rally in the ninth with a single, but a strikeout and throwing out the runner at second attempting to take the base on a ball in the dirt extinguished the threat.
Jeremy Neff (West Palm Beach, Fla.) and Colby Wyatt (Glendale, Ariz.) combined to pitch in the loss. Neff worked 4.2 innings, allowing seven hits, four earned runs and struck out six before giving way. Wyatt threw 4.1 shutout innings, allowing just one hit to go with five strikeouts.
The Monarchs got on the board first, using two infield hits, a hit batter and a fielder's choice to scratch the first run of the afternoon home.
Richmond took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second. Two walks and a pair of fielder's choices loaded the bases for Rinaldi, who doubled to left center to clear the bases and put Richmond up 3-1.
Old Dominion regained the lead in the top of the fifth, plating three runs. With two outs, ODU got a runner on with a single, and Carter Trice lifted a high fly ball to left center that had enough carry on it to fall beyond the outfield wall for a two-run homer. After a single and two walks loaded the bases, a wild pitch brought in the third run of the inning and gave the Monarchs a 4-3 lead.
That score held over the final four innings. The Spiders put runners on in three of those four innings, but couldn't advance past first base.
The Spiders are back in action tomorrow afternoon when they host the George Mason Patriots at 1 p.m. at Pitt Field.
