Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Davidson
05/01/2021 | Baseball
RICHMOND, Va. – After falling in extra innings in game one of Saturday's doubleheader, Richmond baseball rallied behind a dominant performance from Colby Wyatt (Glendale, Ariz.) to split the twinbill. Davidson earned a 4-2 win in the first game of the day, while the Spiders took the nightcap 3-1. After using four pitchers in the first game, Wyatt settled the bullpen with a 7.0 inning, complete game, six strikeout victory. Richmond is now 16-7, and 2-1 in Atlantic 10 play. Davidson is now 21-20 and 5-10 in league play.
Jeremy Neff (West Palm Beach, Fla.) got the start in the first game. Neff worked 5.0 innings, striking out seven hitters, allowing just two hits, and gave up two earned runs. Eli Kimbell (New York, N.Y.) was first out of the bullpen, throwing an inning with a pair of strikeouts. Matthew Plisko (Alpharetta, Ga.) added an appearance and gave way to Jordan Schulefand (Parkland, Fla.) in the seventh. Schulefand suffered the loss, giving up two runs, one earned on three hits. Brenden Argomaniz (Claremont, Calif.) worked in the eighth, retiring the two hitters he faced.
Wyatt handled all the pitching in the nightcap, throwing Richmond's first complete game of the season, and first since March of 2020 when Tim Miller threw a 9.0 inning complete game win over Purdue Fort Wayne in the first game of the Swig and Swine Classic in Charleston. Wyatt faced the minimum through five innings before two runners got on with a hit and a walk in the sixth. He gave up a solo homer in the seventh, but held Davidson in check throughout.
The Richmond offense was held relatively quiet, knocking out 10 hits in the two games. In the first game, Richmond got three hits, none bigger than Jared Sprague-Lott's (Philadelphia, Pa.) solo homer in the second inning. Schulefand and Blakely (Galesburg, Mich.) each added a hit. Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.) drove in a run on a sacrifice fly.
Seven of nine starters got a base knock in the nightcap. Wyatt Ulrich (Indus, Minn.), Schulefand, Blakely, Toso, Chris Rinaldi (Westfield, N.J.), Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y.) and Dan Leckie (Suffield, Conn.) each had a hit. Toso was the only one to go for extra bases with a double in the fourth.
The Spiders got on the board in the bottom of the first inning in game oen. Ulrich led off with a walk and moved up when Schulefand doubled a two-strike pitch into the right field corner. Toso brought Ulrich in with a sacrifice fly to center field to put the Spiders up 1-0. Sprague-Lott doubled up the lead in the bottom of the second with his second homer of the season, a solo shot to left field.
Davidson got a run back in the top of the fourth with a solo home run and eventually tied it in the sixth as a balk was called with the bases loaded to knot it at two.
The Wildcats used the long ball in the top of the eighth to secure the victory, as a two-run homer by Henry Koehler gave Davidson the 4-2 advantage.
Richmond scratched runs across in the bottom of the first and third innings in the nightcap. Ulrich led off the Spiders' half of the first inning with a single to right before stealing second and taking third with a delayed steal. Blakely drove him in with a chopper to third. In the third inning, Leckie singled to start the frame and moved up after Davidson attempted to pick him off and the throw got away. After a sacrifice bunt moved him to third, a wild pitch brought him in and the Spiders were up 2-0.
The Spiders added a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Toso led off with a double to the wall in left center and moved up after a groundout to the right side. A single from Rinaldi brought him in and the Spiders extended the lead to 3-0.
Davidson got a run in the ninth inning with a solo homer from Trevor Candelaria.
Richmond and Davidson finish up the series tomorrow at noon for the final game of this four-game set.
