Baseball Drops Series Opener at George Washington
05/14/2021 | Baseball
Arlington, Va., – Richmond baseball battled with George Washington Friday night at Tucker Field, but the Spiders dropped a 6-5 contest as the Colonials got a base hit in the bottom of the ninth to drive in the game-winning run. The Spiders tied the game with a run in the top of the eighth, but couldn't keep George Washington off the board in the final inning. Richmond falls to 16-13 on the season, and 2-7 in Atlantic 10 play. George Washington improves to 23-13 and 12-5 in league play.
Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.) got the start on the mound. The lefty threw a career-best 7.0 innings, striking out three hitters as he allowed five runs, three earned in a no-decision. Nolan Collins (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) was the first reliever used, throwing a third of an inning. Jacob Marcus (Malvern, Pa.) came on in a one-out bases loaded situation in the eighth. He got the ground ball to get the double play in the eighth, but suffered the loss giving up a run in the ninth. In total, he threw 1.1 innings with two strikeout
At the plate, Richmond had three with multiple hits. Jared Sprague-Lott (Philadelphia, Pa.) finished 2-for-5 with a double, two RBI and scored once. Dan Leckie (Suffield, Conn.) added a 2-for-4 game with a run scored. Rich Ciufo (Medford, N.Y.) was 2-for-4 and scored once. Drew Blakely (Galesburg, Mich.) was the other Spider with a hit, a single late in the game.
George Washington jumped ahead early, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. A lead-off triple scored on a ground ball and a two-out homer put GW up 2-0. The Colonials added another run in the bottom of the second. Back-to-back walks led off the inning. A ground ball was fielded by the second baseman and seemed to apply the tag on the runner advancing to second, but the runner was ruled safe to load the bases. An error allowed a run to score and GW went up 3-0.
The Spiders responded in the third inning. With one out, Ciufo got a rally going with a single up the middle, and a walk put two on. Sprague-Lott drove a double down the third baseline to score both and cut the lead to 3-2. Richmond took the lead in the top of the fifth inning. A single and two walks loaded the bases for Leckie. Leckie lifted a fly ball to shallow center where it was misplayed and two scored as the Spiders took the 4-3 lead.
The Colonials regained the lead the next half inning, scoring a pair of unearned runs. After back-to-back errors put two on, a wild pitch moved them into scoring position. GW got a ground ball to the right side for a run, and a sacrifice fly to right drove in the other to put the Colonials back on top, 5-4.
Richmond tied it up in the top of the eighth inning. Leckie led off with a single and moved up with Chris Rinaldi (Westfield, N.J.) laid down a sacrifice bunt. Ciufo connected on a single to second to move him over, and an error in the transfer brought the run in to tie it at five.
George Washington threatened in the eighth, loading the bases with one out. Marcus got a ground ball and the infield turned the 6-4-3 double play to retire the side.
The Colonials kept the pressure on, and eventually broke through in the bottom of the ninth. After a lead-off double, a single to the right side put runners on the corners with an out. After a strikeout, the cleanup batter of the Colonial lineup drove a single through the right side to bring in the run and give GW the game, 6-5.
The Spiders and Colonials are back in action tomorrow as they will play in a doubleheader beginning at noon at Tucker Field.
