Wyatt Throws Another Complete Game as Baseball Splits Doubleheader at George Mason
05/21/2021 | Baseball
FAIRFAX, Va. – Spider Baseball got its fourth-consecutive complete game, second-straight shutout from graduate transfer Colby Wyatt (Glendale, Ariz.) as the Spiders split the doubleheader at Spuhler Field on Friday evening. Richmond dropped game one 12-5, but bounced back behind a dominant performance from the reigning Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week. Wyatt allowed just two bas runners on two hits, striking out seven to secure the nightcap, 2-0. The Spiders are now 18-17 and 4-11 in A-10 play. George Mason sits at 14-28 and 7-16 in league play.
Six Spiders combined to pitch game one, two making their first appearances of the season. Collin Lowe (Ridgefield, Conn.) got the ball to start, throwing 3.0 innings, allowing seven hits, six runs three earned to go with three strikeouts. Nolan Collins (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) was first on. Antonio Balducci (Hanover, Va.) came on for Collins, throwing an inning, allowing a hit and striking out two. Mason Majors (Kansas City, Mo.) made his first appearance of the season, allowing a run to go with a strikeout. Jack Corkery (Tega Cay, S.C.) faced three hitters before giving way to Jordan Schulefand (Parkland, Fla.). Schulefand didn't allow a run, giving up one hit.
The Spider offense had six hits in the first game, two from the barrel of Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.), who also scored a run. Drew Blakely (Galesburg, Mich.) added a hit with a run scored. Austin Masel (Stoneham, Mass.) was 1-for-2 with a run scored. Dan Leckie (Suffield, Conn.) and Chris Rinaldi (Westfield, N.J.) finished with a hit, an RBI and scored once each. Schulefand added an RBI with a sacrifice fly.
The nightcap was all Wyatt as he threw his fourth-straight complete game. He worked all 7.0 innings, striking out seven hitters and allowing just two to reach base. It was the first time since April 3, 2019 that Richmond walk a batter. He improves his record to 4-2 on the year.
The Spider offense went for seven hits, led by a 2-for-3 effort from Toso. Toso hit his fourth home run of the season to provide the Spiders with some late insurance in the seventh. Justin Cook (Virginia Beach, Va.) drove in a run in the sixth with a single. Wyatt Ulrich (Indus, Minn.), Alden Mathes (Philadelphia, Pa.), Leckie and Zach Lass (Mechanicsville, Va.) all had hits in the nightcap.
George Mason took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning of game one. Back-to-back singles led off the inning and a sacrifice fly brought in the first run. An error by the Spider defense allowed two runs to score before another single drove in the final run for the Patriots. Mason added two more in the bottom of the third with a solo home run and scoring from third on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 6-0. After a couple lead-off walks in the bottom of the fourth, a single from Bailey Klein brought in two more to extend the lead to 8-0. A solo homer in the fourth extended the lead to 9-0.
Richmond got on the board in the fifth, scoring four runs. Blakely led off by getting hit by a pitch, and back-to-back singles from Masel and Leckie brought in the first run. After a fly out, Rinaldi doubled to right center to score another. Schulefand brought in the third run on a sacrifice fly, and the fourth run of the inning came in on a throwing error by the Mason shortstop.
George Mason battled back, scoring three runs as Richmond added a run in the seventh to cut it down to 12-5.
It took until the top of the sixth inning in the nightcap for either team to cross the plate. Rinaldi reached with two outs in the sixth and Cook knocked a single to left to bring him in and put the Spiders up 1-0. Toso doubled up the lead with a solo home run in the seventh.
Wyatt held George Mason off the board, giving up a triple with two outs in the top of the seventh, but that was just the second base runner he allowed all game. He got a pop up to end the threat and secure the win.
Richmond and George Mason close out the regular season tomorrow afternoon with a single nine-inning game beginning at 2 p.m.
