RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond baseball team connected four two-out base hits to score two runs in the bottom of the ninth. Unfortunately, the Spiders rally fell short, dropping a 7-6 decision in the Atlantic 10 series finale to George Washington University Sunday at Pitt Field.
Richmond falls to 18-18 on the year and 3-9 in A-10 play, while GW moves to 19-20 on the year and 7-5 in league action. The Spiders head on the road to New York for their next series, taking on St. Bonaventure for three games starting Friday, April 29. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. on ESPN+.
The Spiders got on the board first in the second inning, when Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y.) scored on Jason Neff's (West Palm Beach, Fla.) double after leading off the frame with single back up the middle.
GW got one run off of Spider starter Rob Ready (Cape May, N.J.) in the third to tie the game at 1-all. Ready scattered four hits, two walks, one hit batter and two strikeouts over three innings of work before handing it over to the Spiders pen.
Jared Sprague-Lott (Philadelphia, Pa.) tied the game with a RBI triple in the third, as Drew Beno (Loxahatchee, Fla.) scored from first. Beno led off the frame with a base hit to left.
The Colonials tallied two runs in the top in the fourth off of reliever Jack Buckley (Bronx, N.Y.), but the Spiders came back to re-take the lead in the bottom of the frame. Chase Conklin (Mullica Hill, N.J.) doubled in D.J. Pacheco (Danvers, Mass.) to tie the game at 3-all. Conklin then scored on Alden Mathes' (Broomall, Pa.) single to right to give the Spiders the lead.
Esteban Rodriguez (Doral, Fla.) retired five-straight GW batters, including four strikeouts and a 1-2-3 fifth, before allowing a hit and a run in the sixth. Rodriguez only allowed two hits and a walk in 2.1 innings pitched.
Vincent Corso (West Harrison, N.Y.) took the loss, allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits and a walk in an inning of work. Antonio Balducci (Mechanicsville, Va.) struck out the one batter he faced before turning it over to Winston Allen (Morristown, N.J.). Allen allowed one run on two walks and collected a strike out in a 1.1 innings of work. Josh Willitts (Southampton, N.J.) allowed a hit and got a strike out to end the top of the ninth.
Mathes started the two-out hit rally in the ninth with a single to right center. Sprague-Lott followed with a base hit to left before Hipsman loaded the bases with an infield single. Jake Elbeery (North Andover, Mass.) laced his second hit of the game down the left field line to score Mathes and Sprague-Lott. GW's reliever got the fly out to end the Spiders rally.
