Elbeery Blasts Home Run, Spiders Fall Short at Davidson

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Richmond Baseball team battled back Sunday, getting within one run in the ninth, but Davidson's closer got out of the jam and handed the Spiders a 4-3 loss. Richmond falls to 12-12 on the season and 0-3 in Atlantic 10 play. Davidson improves to 22-5 and 3-0 in league play. Richmond returns to Pitt Field to host Longwood Tuesday, with first pitch set for 2:30 p.m. on ESPN-Plus.
Richmond answered Davidson's run in the first with a solo home run to right center by Jake Elbeery (North Andover, Mass.) in the top of the second.
Davidson took a 3-1 lead in the third on a two-run home run to left center and then added a single run in the sixth on a solo home run to go to 4-1.
Richmond starter Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.) went five innings on the mound, allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits, five walks and two hit batters, while striking out nine. Josh Willitts (Southampton, N.J.) took over in the sixth, allowing one run on two hits and two walks, with two strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work.
Richmond's rally started in the eighth with a double by Mathes to right field. Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.) followed with an infield single to third. Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y.) doubled in Mathes and pushed Toso to third. Jared Sprague-Lott (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored Toso on a sacrifice fly to right, to put the Spiders within one, 4-3.
Brenden Argomaniz (Claremont, Calif.) tossed the final 1.1 innings of the game, holding Davidson scoreless in the bottom of the eighth and striking out one.
With two outs in the ninth, Chase Conklin (Mullica Hill, N.J.) drew a five-pitch walk and was followed by a base hit by Christian Beal (Flossmoor, Ill.), his second of the day. Davidson's closer struck out Mathes on three pitches to end the game in Davidson's favor.
