RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond baseball team snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 9-2 victory over Longwood Tuesday at Pitt Field.
Richmond (13-12) heads out on the road to take on Saint Louis starting Friday at 4 p.m. eastern for an Atlantic 10 Conference weekend series. Longwood falls to 13-16 on the season.
"I am ecstatic about today's pitching performance," head coach Tracy Woodson said. "One walk and no hit batters, the staff had a great day on the mound."
"Scoring nine runs to start the game is nice," Woodson said. "But we got to keep scoring and continue to extend our lead."
The Lancers scored first to open the game, tallying a run on a walk and two hits off of Spiders starter Jeremy Neff (West Palm Beach, Fla.). Neff also allowed Longwood's other run in the second on two hits. In two innings of work, Neff collected all six outs via strikeout.
The Spiders were patient at the plate in the bottom of the first as seven Richmond batters reached via the walk in the inning. Christian Beal (Flosmoor, Ill.) and Jake Elbeery (North Andover, Mass.) drew back-to-back walks, before Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.) singled to load the bases. Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y.) collected a walk to force in Beal for the Spiders first run of the game.
Designated hitter Will Gersky (Woodbury, Conn.) blasted a grand slam, his second of the season, over the left field fence to give the Spiders a 5-1 lead. Jason Neff (West Palm Beach, Fla.) kept the line moving with a single, but tallied the second out of the inning on Chase Conklin's (Mullica Hill, N.J.) fielder's choice. D.J. Pacheco (Danvers, Mass.) and Beal both tallied walks to load the bases again.
Conklin and Pacheco then scored on Elbeery's single to center, while Beal went first to third, pushing the Spiders lead to 7-1. Toso collected his second hit of the inning, this time going to right field to score Beal and push Elbeery to third. Hipsman walked for the second time of inning to load the bases again, while Jared Sprague-Lott's (Philadelphia, Pa.) walk forced in the ninth Spider run of the inning.
Spider reliever Vincent Corso (West Harrison, N.Y.) collected the victory, picking up his second win of the season, after tossing a career-high four scoreless innings while striking out a career-high four Lancers and allowing only one hit.
Jack Buckley (Bronx, N.Y.) tossed a scoreless seventh, working around one hit, but the Spider defense got a 9-6 double play to only face three in the inning. Winston Allen (Morristown, N.J.) picked up his first 1-2-3 inning as a Spider in the eighth. He returned to the mound in the ninth, working around a base hit to keep the Lancers off the scoreboard and seal the victory.
