OLEAN, N.Y. – The University of Richmond baseball team completed the Atlantic 10 Conference series sweep Sunday with an 8-4 victory over St. Bonaventure at Handler Park at McGraw-Jennings Field. With the victory the Spiders move to 21-18 on the season and 6-9 in A-10 action, while the Bonnies fall to 2-31 on the year and 1-14 in league action.
Richmond is back in action Tuesday, hosting VMI at Pitt Field. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
The Spiders got on the board in the first inning, connecting three consecutive hits from Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.), Jared Sprague-Lott (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y.) to take a 1-0 lead.
St. Bonaventure answered with a run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first.
Richmond responded with two runs in the top of the third to take a 3-1 lead. With two out, Mathes launched a solo home run, his sixth on the year, to right field. Again, the Spiders strung together three base hits this time from Sprague-Lott, Hipsman and Jake Elbeery (North Andover, Mass.) to tally another run against the Bonnies.
Jason Neff (West Palm Beach, Fla.) led off the fourth with a solo home run for his fourth home run of the season.
The Bonnies tagged Richmond starter Eli Larson (Mill Valley, Calif.) with two runs in the bottom of the third and a single run in the fourth. Larson exited the game after the fourth, scattering four runs, three earned, on six hits, a walk and struck out four.
Brenden Argomaniz (Claremont, Calif.) took over on the hill, holding St. Bonaventure scoreless in the final five innings of the game to get the victory. Argomaniz, now 3-0 on the season, did not surrender a hit to the Bonnies, but walked two and hit two, while striking out two.
Richmond broke open the game in the sixth, taking advantage of back-to-back walks from Zach Lass (Mechanicsville, Va.) and Neff. Putting pressure on the Bonnies defense, Lass scored on a SBU throwing error. Neff then scored on a sacrifice bunt from Drew Beno (Loxahatchee, Fla.).
The Spiders tacked on two more runs in the ninth. Mathes laced his fourth hit of the game through the right side of the Bonnies defense, as Sprague-Lott drew a walk. They both advanced a base on groundout by Hipsman. Mathes scored the first run of the inning on a balk by SBU's pitcher. Sprauge-Lott crossed the plate for the Spiders second run of the frame on a dropped fly ball by the left fielder.
