Spider Offense Explodes to Knock-Off SLU, On to Semifinals
05/27/2022 | Baseball
Richmond moves to 29-25 on the season and heads to the second semifinal game to face the loser between the two-seed VCU and one-seed Davidson Friday night at Wilson Field. This marks the first time since 2019 Richmond has advanced to the semifinals.
The Spiders tallied 16 runs on 18 hits to mark the third most runs and fourth most hits in a game this season.
After giving up a first-inning sacrifice fly to Saint Louis, Richmond starter Eli Larson (Mill Valley, Calif.) threw six and a third shutout innings. Larson scattered six hits, three walks and one hit batter while striking out three. Jack Buckley (Bronx, N.Y.) took over and threw two pitches to get the double-play to end the eighth. Buckley tossed the ninth, allowing three runs on four hits.
Richmond got on the board in the third inning. After D.J. Pacheco (Danvers, Mass.) led off the frame with a double to left center, he then scored easily on Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.) sixth triple of the season and tie the game. Mathes then scored on Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.) sacrifice fly to right field to put UR up 2-1.
The Spiders broke open the game in the bottom of the fifth, scoring seven runs on six hits. Pacheco led off the inning with a triple and scored on Christian Beal (Flossmoor, Ill.) RBI base hit through the infield. Toso drew a walk and Johnny Hipsman (Chester, Pa.) was hit to load the bases.
On a 1-2 pitch, Jason Neff (West Palm Beach, Fla.) blasted a grand slam to right field, collecting his team-leading 10th home run of the season and put the Spiders up 7-1. Jake Elbeery (North Andover, Mass.) went back-to-back tallying his fifth home run of the season. Jared Sprague-Lott (Philadelphia, Pa.) kept the hit parade moving with a single and then scored on Beal's second RBI hit of the inning.
Hipsman launched his sixth home run of the season to get the offense going in the sixth with a solo shot to right field. Neff, Elbeery and Sprague-Lott tallied three-straight base hits, pushing two runs across to push the Spiders lead out to 12-1.
Richmond tacked on four runs in the seventh on three hits. Elbeery tallied his second RBI of the game on his fourth hit, bringing in Mathes. Lass collected a two-RBI base hit, before Beal tallied his third RBI on his third hit of the game.
