Spiders Upsets Top-Seeded Wildcats to Advance to A-10 Championship
05/28/2022 | Baseball
Moving to 30-25 on the season, tallying 30 wins for the first time since 2018, Richmond will face two-seed VCU Saturday with first pitch set for noon on ESPN+. The Spiders need to defeat the Rams to force a winner's-take-all title game, which will start 30 minutes after the completion of the first game.
The Spiders jumped on the Wildcats, with Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.) scoring from first on Dominic Toso's (Philadelphia, Pa.) double down the left field line in the first.
Davidson answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the first and added a run in the second on two more hits off of Richmond starter Vincent Corso (West Harrison, N.Y.)
Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y.) snatched the lead back with a two-out, two-run home run in the top of the third. Zach Lass (Mechanicsville, Va.) hit a solo home run in the top of the fourth to put the Spiders up 4-2.
Davidson tagged Corso with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game. Corso went three and a third innings for Richmond, allowing four earned runs on four hits and three walks with two strikeouts.
With two outs in the top of the fifth, Toso doubled, then scored on Hipsman's triple to take the lead. After a walk by Jason Neff (West Palm Beach, Fla.), Jake Elbeery (North Andover, Mass.) laced an RBI single to right center to pick up Hipsman. Jared Sprague-Lott (Philadelphia, Pa.) tallied his own RBI single to right to score Neff for the Spiders third run of the frame, up 7-4.
Winston Allen (Morristown, N.J.) made his second appearance out of the pen of the tournament for the Spiders. Allen allowed two earned runs in the fifth on three hits and three walks, and collected a strikeout in one and a third innings of work. Rob Ready (Cape May, N.J.) took over for Allen and on his third pitch thrown, he got the ground out to get out of the jam in the fifth.
After the Spiders added a run in the sixth on a Christian Beal (Flossmoor, Ill.) RBI double down the left field line, Ready threw three shutout innings of relief.
Richmond put up three runs in the eighth and one in the ninth to take a 12-6 lead. Mathes hit a two-run home run for his 10th home run of the season in the eighth. Toso and Hipsman hit back-to-back singles and then Neff was hit to load the bases with one out. Elbeery tallied his second RBI-single of the game to plate the third run of the eighth.
Ready gave up a solo home run in the top of the ninth allowing Davidson to cut into Richmond's lead, 12-7. Mathes then came in from center field to pitch, allowing a two-run home run. He buckled down to strikeout the next two batters and get a popup to short left center to knock off Davidson.
