Spider Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader Against Yale

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond baseball team picked up its first two wins of the season with a doubleheader sweep of Yale Sunday at Pitt Field. The Spiders took game one 11-7 and game two 16-6 in seven innings.
Richmond, now 2-5 on the season, goes out on the road Wednesday, heading to Lexington, Va., to take on VMI with first pitch set for 5 p.m.
Game 1 –
Yale jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, on two solo home runs. Alden Mathes doubled in Christian Beal, then scored on Jordan Jaffe's single to left center to knot the game at 2-all.
Mikey Kluska gave the Spiders a 3-2 lead in the second, sending a shot down the right field line to score Chase Conklin after Conklin reached on a lead-off double.
The Bulldogs tacked on four runs in the third off of Spider starter Brock Weirather. Weirather finished the day allowing six runs, five earned, on six hits, two walks and a strike out.
Esteban Rodriguez took over on the mound, getting the final out of the fourth via a strikeout. Rodriguez (1-0) picked up the win after scattering one run on two hits, a walk and three strikeouts.
Richmond bats got going in the fourth. Beal legged out a one-out double then scored on Jaffe's second of three hits on the day.
Yale tacked on their final run of the day in the seventh, as the Spiders came roaring back. Jaffe drew a lead-off walk. Hipsman followed with a base hit, then both runners advanced on a Yale balk, before Jake Elbeery doubled both in to tie the game at 7-all. Zach Lass doubled to score Elbeery for the lead, then came home on Kluska's triple to left center, for a 9-7 advantage.
Mathes came in from center to toss two scoreless innings in relief to earn the save. He didn't allow a hit, walked two and struck out three in the eighth.
Richmond tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the eighth. Jaffe doubled in Mathes before scoring on Elbeery's second double of the game.
Game 2
Yale got a run in the second inning, but Jake Topolski snatched back the lead in the bottom of the frame with a two-run home run, scoring Conklin from first, for his first hit as a Spider.
The Richmond offense sent 12 to the plate in the third inning, pushing the lead out to 8-1. Jaffe logged his first collegiate home run, a three-run shot, scoring Beal and Mathes. Jason Neff followed with his first home run of the season. Jared Sprague-Lott doubled then scored on Conklin's sacrifice fly for the fifth run of the frame. Topolski drew a walk then scored on Kulska's second triple of the day.
Yale tallied a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth, pushing Richmond starter Jake Michel out of the game. Michel (1-0) collected the win scattering five runs on eight hits, with three walks and a strikeout in three and a third of an inning of work.
