Spider Baseball Captures Weekend Series Over UMass

AMHERST, Mass. – The Richmond Baseball offense erupted for 15 runs on 15 hits defeating Massachusetts 15-7 to capture the Atlantic 10 Conference series Sunday at Earl Lorden Field.
Richmond, now 16-20 on the season and 5-4 in league action, continues on the road Wednesday, returning a home-and-home series against Towson. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. on FloSports.
The Spider offense spotted UR starter Jeremy Neff a 4-0 lead before taking the mound. Johnny Hipsman doubled in Jared Sprague-Lott for the first run of the game. Hipsman than trotted around the bases after Jordan Jaffe launched his sixth home run of the season to left center. Chase Conklin rounded out the first inning scoring, picking up an RBI base hit to score Jason Neff as the squad batted around.
Jeremy Neff picked up two quick outs, but UMass scored three runs on three two-out hits and a walk before the Spiders got the third out. Neff settled on the mound and tossed five scoreless frames, working around one more walk, a hit batter and striking out seven more batters to collect the victory.
With the bases loaded in the second, Jason Neff picked up an RBI base hit to right, to score Sprague-Lott. Hipsman then scored the second run of the frame on a UMass wild pitch to give the Spiders a 6-3 lead.
In his third at-bat of the day Hipsman collected his third hit with a two-RBI double to right center, pushing the Spiders lead out to 8-3.
With one out and two on in the seventh, Mikey Kluska scored Christian Beal from second with a base hit through the right side of the infield. Hipsman picked up his fourth RBI with a sacrifice fly to right for the Spiders 10th run of the game.
Hipsman picked up his season-high fifth RBI run of the game in the top of the ninth with a base hit to score Conklin from second. Hipsman finished the game with four hits, three runs scored and two doubles. Conklin put together a four-for-four day at the plate, with an RBI and three runs scored as the designated hitter in the eighth spot in the lineup.
With the bases loaded in the ninth, Alden Mathes launched a ball to right field for a grand slam and put the Spiders up 15-5.
UMass got two runs in the bottom of the eighth and the ninth off of UR reliever Kyle Subers to get within15-7. Subers allowed four runs on two hits and four walks with four strikeouts in three innings of work.
