04/21/2023 | Baseball
The squads return to Pitt Field for the second game of the Atlantic 10 series Saturday with first pitch moved up to 10 a.m. due to inclement weather headed for the Richmond area. Fans can tune into the stream of the game on ESPN3, with Craig Kocher and University of Richmond President Kevin Hallock on the call. A cable subscription will be needed to stream this contest.
Richmond improves to 17-21 on the season and 6-4 in A-10 play while Fordham moves to 15-23 on the year and 3-7 in league action.
Fordham took a quick lead to open the game, tagging Richmond starter Brock Weirather for two runs in the first inning on a base hit after batters reached on a walk and hit by pitch.
The Spiders answered with a run in the second inning when Chase Conklin picked up Christian Beal from third on a ground out. Beal led off the inning with a double down the left field line and advanced to third on a fly ball.
Richmond's first big offensive inning came in the third. After Johnny Hipsman and Alden Mathes both drew walks, Jason Neff hit a three-run home run to left field to take a 4-2 lead. Beal trotted to first after getting hit by a pitch and three pitches later he was trotting around the bases after Jake Elbeery launched his second home run of the season over the wall in left center.
Fordham picked up a run in the fourth to cut the lead in half at 6-3. But the Rams bats got loud in the top of the fifth against Weirather. Fordham tallied five runs on five hits, including a two-run home run and a three run-home run, to take an 8-6 lead.
The UR offense responded in the bottom of the fifth. Jared Sprague-Lott launched a three-run blast for his team-leading ninth home run of the season to right center to retake the lead, 9-8. Hipsman and Jordan Jaffe had back-to-back base hits before scoring on Mathes two-RBI double. Neff drew a walk and both him and Mathes advanced a base on a Fordham balk. Mathes then scored on a passed ball while Neff scored on a double from Beal to give the Spiders a 13-8 lead.
Esteban Rodriguez took over for Wierather on the mound in the sixth. Rodriguez picked up his second save of the season after tossing four shutout innings, allowing only two hits and a walk, with six strikeouts.
Richmond added single runs in the sixth and eighth innings to capture a 15-8 victory. Jaffe collected an RBI double in the sixth and an RBI on a sacrifice fly in the eighth.
