Four-Run Eighth Powers Spider Baseball Past GW

ARLINGTON, Va. – Richmond Baseball broke a 2-2 tie with a four-run eighth inning to defeat George Washington 7-3 Saturday afternoon at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
Richmond improves to 13-18 on the year and 2-3 in Atlantic 10 action while GW moves to 10-21 on the season and 2-3 in league play. The final game of the league series is set for a noon first pitch Sunday on ESPN+.
GW got on the board in the first inning combining two hits, a walk and a wild pitch for one run before UR starter Brock Weirather got a strikeout to end the frame and stranding two base runners.
Richmond answered with a single run in the top of the third when Jordan Jaffe drew a bases loaded walk to force in Jared Sprague-Lott. Sprague-Lott drew a walk then was followed by a base hit by Johnny Hipsman before Alden Mathes drew a two-out walk to load the bases.
GW kicked off the bottom of the third with a solo home run to retake the lead. After Mathes doubled in the fifth, he scored on Jaffe's single and a Colonial error in the outfield to tie the game at two all.
Weirather tossed six and two-thirds of an inning, allowing two runs on eight hits and a walk with six strikeouts. Harrison Clifton got the final out of the seventh and picked up his first collegiate win after only allowing one run on two hits with a walk in an inning of work.
Jake Elbeery led off the top of the eighth with a walk and advanced to second on a ground out. Elbeery moved up to third on Sprague-Lott's base hit. After the first of three GW pitching changes in the inning, Elbeery scored on Hipsman's base hit. Jason Neff and Mathes both drew walks to load the bases. Jaffe picked up Hipsman, while Mathes and Neff scored on Christian Beal's base hit to right to give Richmond a 6-2 lead.
GW took back a run in the bottom of the eighth, but Dane Armson came in and struck out the only batter he faced.
Richmond added an insurance run when Hipsman singled in Mikey Kluska after he legged out a double in the top of the ninth.
Mathes came in from center to pitch in the ninth. He struck out the first batter he faced and allowed one hit but kept the Colonials off the board.
