Spiders Get Senior Day Sweep of Davidson, 5th Seed in A-10 Tournament

RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond Baseball completed the squad's first series sweep of the season Saturday, blasting past Davidson 18-2 at Pitt Field on Senior Day.
With the win, Richmond (26-26, 14-9) is the five seed in the 2023 Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament and will face the four seed Saint Louis Tuesday at 11 a.m. at The Diamond in Richmond. Richmond starter Kyle Subers set the tone with a strikeout to start the game, working around a walk to keep Davidson off the board.
UR reliever Brian Reinke collected his first collegiate win, scattering two runs on seven hits, one walk and one hit batter with one strikeout in four innings of work. After the third inning, the Spider pitching staff shut down the Wildcat offense, allowing just two hits, four walks and one hit batter while striking out six. Matthew Anderson threw two innings, while Jake Michel and Chase Topolski tossed one inning each.
Richmond scored early and often on Davidson, taking a quick 3-2 lead after two and a half innings.
Alden Mathes got the Spider offense going in the third, lacing a base hit through the infield before scoring on Jake Elbeery's base hit to short right. Zach Lass pushed two more runs in on a base hit, then scored on Mikey Kluska's double for a 7-2 lead. Kluska came in on Jared Sprague-Lott's base hit to left. Batting for a second time in the inning, Mathes doubled in Johnny Hipsman and scored with Jordan Jaffe on Christian Beal's base hit. Beal tallied the Spider's ninth run of the frame on Jason Neff's second base hit of the inning.
Richmond got a run in the fourth, two in the fifth, two in the sixth and one more in the seventh when pinch hitter Will Gersky forced in Shane Gipson after drawing a bases loaded walk.
Prior to the start of the game Richmond Baseball honored 13 seniors and graduate students, as well as their families, in the class of 2023: Brenden Argomaniz, Christian Beal, Drew Beno, Will Gersky, Shane Gipson, Johnny Hipsman, Jason Neff, Jeremy Neff, Alden Mathes, Andrew Moy, Andrew Papantonis, Kyle Subers and Brock Weirather.
