RICHMOND, Va. – Johnny Hipsman's five-for-five day spurred Richmond Baseball to a 13-3 victory late Wednesday, eliminating Rhode Island from the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament at The Diamond.
With the victory, Richmond (27-27) will take on top-seeded Saint Joseph's Thursday at 3 PM on ESPN+ at The Diamond.
The Spiders broke through first in the third inning. Hipsman doubled in Mikey Kluska to take the lead. Alden Mathes then legged out an inside-the-park two-run home run for his ninth home run of the season and give the Spiders a 3-0 lead.
Rhode Island answered in the top of the fourth, breaking up a no-hitter and tied the game at 3-all. UR starter Kyle Subers tossed three and two-thirds of an inning, allowing two runs on two hits and one walk while striking out four before being lifted due to injury. After Esteban Rodriguez allowed one run in the fourth, he dominated URI batters for the next five innings, striking out 12 while scattering four hits and hitting one batter to capture his fifth win of the season.
Hipsman broke the tie with a lead-off solo home run in the fifth that left The Diamond over the right field wall. 2023 A-10 Rookie of the Year Jordan Jaffe had an RBI single in the sixth before scoring alongside Hipsman on Christian Beal's RBI base hit and put UR up 7-3.
Richmond added six runs in the eighth inning. Mathes picked up his third RBI with a base hit to center and knocked out the URI reliver. Jason Neff drew a bases loaded walk to force in a run before Jake Elbeery pushed in a run with a base hit to second. Two more runs scored on a fielder's choice ground out and URI miscue to put UR up 12-3. Kluska slammed the door on URI, legging out his fifth triple of the year to score Zach Lass from first for UR's 13th run of the game.
