Topolski Blasts Grand Slam, Niagara Takes Four Game Series

RICHMOND, Va. – Jake Topolski put the Richmond Baseball team up 5-3 in the bottom of the first with a grand slam, but the Niagara Purple Eagles came away with an 18-5, 7 inning, victory Sunday at Pitt Field.

Richmond is back in action Tuesday, hosting William & Mary for a 1:30 p.m. contest at Pitt Field.

Phil Bernstein led off the opening frame with a base hit and moved up on Jake Elbeery's walk. Both runners advanced on Jason Shockley's sacrifice bunt before Jack Arcamone loaded the bases with a walk. Joey Wilga forced in the first Spider run, drawing a walk of his own.

On a 2-1 count, Topolski launched the ball 378 feet over the left field wall for his first Spider home run and grand slam of the 2024 season. Topolski also lined a double to left in the fifth inning but was stranded.

Richmond was held off the board the rest of the game, as the Purple Eagle batters found ways to keep putting up runs.

Vincent Corso made his 2024 debut, allowing three runs on three hits with a walk and two strikeouts in one inning of work. Kellan Heney (0-1) also made his debut, allowing seven runs (three earned) on three hits and three walks in an inning plus. Ethan Sannes tossed an inning plus, allowing five runs (three earned) on two hits, three walks, a hit batter and one strike out.

Dane Armson went one and two-thirds, allowing two runs on three walks, no hits and three strikeouts, as Davis Wallon tossed one and a third, allowing an unearned run on two hits, a walk and two strikeouts. Jackson Kraemer came in from centerfield for the seventh, throwing a clean inning, allowing one hit batter to reach, but struck out two.
