RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond baseball offense heated up Sunday, as three Spiders hit multi-run home runs to collect a 13-3 victory in eight innings to go 2-1 in the Central Virginia Challenge at Pitt Field.
Richmond, now 5-6 on the season, embark on their first road trip Tuesday, heading to Harrisonburg to face James Madison Wednesday. First pitch against the Dukes is set for 3 p.m.
Jason Shockley's sacrifice bunt in the first inning to score Aaron Whitley got the Spiders on the board in the first.
The Blue Devils answered back with two in the third off UR starter Vincent Corso to take a 2-1 lead. Corso went two-plus innings, allowing two runs on three hits, three walks and two strikeouts.
Jack Arcamone, picking up Jake Topolski, hit his first collegiate home run to right in the fourth to regain the lead. DJ Pacheco scored from second while the CCSU defense was distracted by Phil Bernstein's base hit to first, as no one was covering the plate, and put Richmond up 4-2.
In the top of the seventh, the Blue Devils scratched across a run in the seventh off Richmond reliever Esteban Rodriguez. Rodriguez (1-0) collected the win after throwing five and two-thirds of an inning, allowing one run on four hits, a hit batter, two walks and seven strikeouts.
Bernstein drew a walk, stole second and advanced to third on Jake Elbeery's fly out before scoring on an infield single by Shockley. Joey Wilga tallied a base hit before Topolski launched a three-run home run to center field, putting the Spiders up 8-3.
After back-to-back walks drawn by Arcamone and Pacheco, Aidan O'Keefe launched his first collegiate home run to left field to put the Spiders up 11-3.
In the eighth, the Spiders drew three straight walks. Pacheco reached on a fielder's choice to score Joey Wilga. O'Keefe tallied a fourth RBI with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Topolski and putting the Spiders up 10 runs.
