Spiders Fall on the Road at JMU

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The University of Richmond baseball team struck first and rallied in the eighth on Wednesday night, but James Madison held on for a 14-4 victory at Eagle Field.
Richmond, now 13-20 on the season, returns to Pitt Field to host George Washington in Atlantic 10 Conference action Friday. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. on ESPN Plus.
Aaron Whitley sent the first pitch of the game over the left center fence to quickly spot Richmond a 1-0 lead.
Dane Armson tossed a scoreless first inning, working around a walk. JMU got to the UR's second pitcher of the game, Ethan Sannes, posting five runs on three hits and two walks.
Vincent Corso worked around two walks to keep the Dukes off the board in the third. Second baseman Jake Topolski connected with catcher Jason Shockley to throw at the runner trying to steal home to end the inning.
Harrison Clifton allowed one run to score in the fourth on a walk and a hit, making it 6-1. JMU cleared the bases in the fifth on a ball hit to center that was called a trapped ball, pushing their lead to 9-1.
The Spiders got two on in the top of the sixth, but both were stranded.
JMU tallied a 10th run in the bottom of the frame, taking advantage of two walks and a base hit. Matthew Anderson took the mound in the seventh and retired the side in order, finishing with a strikeout.
In the eighth, the Spiders got the offense started with back-to-back walks by Joey Wilga and Jason Shockley. Nick Lorenzo reached on a fielder's choice and was followed by a base hit by Phil Bernstein to load the bases. RJ Rickabaugh tallied a RBI on a sacrifice fly to center field to score Shockley and make it 10-2. Jordan Jaffe cleared the bases with a double to the gap in right center, cutting into the Dukes lead, 10-4.
JMU tallied four more runs in the bottom of the eighth off Jake Young on three hits and two walks for the 14-4 victory.
