Spider Baseball Collects Sunday Victory over Fordham

BRONX, NY – The University of Richmond baseball team avoided the series sweep Sunday, picking up a 6-2 victory in Atlantic 10 Conference action against Fordham.
Richmond, now 13-18 on the year and 3-3 in league action, returns to Pitt Field to host VMI Tuesday in the first of two midweek contests. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. on ESPN+. UR heads to James Madison Wednesday for a 6 p.m. contest, also set to be streamed on ESPN+.
Esteban Rodriguez tossed four and a third of an inning of scoreless action, working around four hits, two walks and one strikeout. Logan Ymker took over and continued to keep Fordham off the board in his one and two-thirds of an inning of work. Ymker allowed two hits, a hit batter and struck out four.
The Spiders scored first when Jake Topolski was hit with the bases loaded to force in the first run of the game in the third.
Fordham briefly took a 2-1 lead after Dane Armson allowed a two-run home run in the seventh. The Spider offense picked him up and answered in the eighth when Aaron Whitley singled through the infield to score RJ Rickabaugh and Connor Larson to regain the lead, 3-2.
In the top of the ninth the Spiders added three insurance runs. Jordan Jaffe, after making an over-the-shoulder catch in the bottom of the eighth, led off with a double for his third hit of the game. Rickabaugh and Larson both reached on hit by pitch to load the bases for Joey Wilga. Wilga laced a base hit to left center to clear the bases and put the Spiders up 6-2.
Cole Hentschel took the mound in the eighth and retired the Rams in order. In the ninth, he worked around a bases loaded situation and struck out the final two batters of the game to collect his fourth save of the season.
