Spider Baseball Drops Midweek Slugfest to VMI

UR moves to 13-19 on the season and head to Harrisonburg to face James Madison on Wednesday for a 6 PM contest.
Chase Topolski tossed a clean first inning with a strike out, but the VMI batters got to him, posting three runs on two hits and a walk in the second before he was lifted down 4-0. Vincent Corso took over getting the final out and struck out the first batter of the third. The Keydets added two more runs in the top of the third to make it 6-0.
The Spider offense caught fire in the bottom of the third, working the bases loaded on an error, a single and a hit by pitch. Phil Bernstein forced in the first run after drawing a walk. DJ Pacheco put a ball in play to score a run to make it 6-2. With a full count, Jordan Jaffe launched his fifth home run of the season over the left field wall to get within one, 6-5.
Ethan Sannes worked around a walk and a hit to keep the Keydets off the board in the fourth.
Richmond quickly got two on in the bottom of the fourth, reaching on a hit by pitch and a walk. Both runners advanced a base on a ground out before Jake Topolski scored on a wild pitch to tie the game. Joey Wilga launched a two-run home run to take an 8-6 lead and force a VMI pitching change. Three batters later, DJ Pacheco hit a two-run home run to left to make it 10-6.
VMI answered with six of their own in the fifth to regain the lead, 12-10. Connor Larson picked an RBI single, scoring Topolski from second in the fifth to get back within one. Larson also forced in a run after getting hit in the sixth.
VMI tacked on six more runs in the seventh and three in the eighth for a 23-13 victory.
